Stories, conversation and learning through play give Rosslyn Park’s nursery its character. Within the school in Aspley, Nottingham, the early years approach combines children’s own choices with activities directed by adults. Independence is an explicit aim: the school wants children to take an active role in their learning, rather than simply follow instructions.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its October 2023 inspection. That judgement covers early years across the school, rather than a separately graded nursery.
Learning takes place outside as well as inside, with time for children to initiate activities and time for adults to guide them. Themes grow from stories, introducing ideas and vocabulary through a shared context. This gives books a role beyond story time: they help connect what children hear with what they explore and discuss.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach initially prioritises communication, language, emotional development and relationships. In everyday terms, learning to express an idea and cooperate with another child matters alongside later literacy and maths. Helicopter stories form part of the work on speaking and vocabulary. As children progress through early years, Read, Write inc and mastery mathematics introduce more direct teaching of literacy and mathematical skills.
In October 2023, children settled into familiar routines, understood adults’ expectations and developed cooperative play. The early years curriculum was generally organised in a logical sequence, but some parts identified activities more precisely than the knowledge children should retain. That distinction matters: an enjoyable activity also needs a clear learning purpose.
Preparation begins with Meet and greet and Getting ready for nursery sessions involving children, parents and carers. These offer a shared introduction to starting nursery. In October 2023, early years children were content and received attentive care, giving families a dated indication of their experience.
Communication from the school goes through Arbor. Parents can also arrange a meeting with a teacher or another staff member through the office, providing a route for a longer conversation about their child.
Across the school, Place2Be provides individual and small-group emotional support, with a room where children can explore worries through creative activities, conversation and play. Its eligibility includes any child needing emotional support. The school also uses Nottingham City Council’s Routes to Inclusion (R2I) toolkit to support inclusion.
Aspens supplies the school’s meals and can cater for allergies, intolerances and religious dietary requirements. Families using that meal service have a specific route for discussing dietary needs. A healthy packed lunch is the alternative to paid school dinners for children who do not qualify for free meals.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application: familiarity with the school and the admissions decision are separate matters.
For entry in September 2027, the application deadline is 15 January 2027. The normal route is through Nottingham City Council’s online admissions application; Nottingham City residents can also use a paper Common Application Form. The local authority sends the school-place offer directly to families. Keep that application deadline in view even while your child is attending nursery.
There are morning and afternoon nursery sessions: 8:45am to 11:45am, or 12:30pm to 3:30pm. These are distinct three-hour blocks, so the session choice affects the family’s daily schedule.
