Nursery at Southglade Primary and Nursery School

Numbers to ten, conversations with a talk partner and meals served at the table give Southglade’s nursery day its shape. This is a 52-place provision for children aged 3–4, with places divided between whole-day attendance and morning or afternoon sessions. It belongs to Southglade Primary and Nursery School on Beckhampton Road, Nottingham.
The surroundings have changed. Children moved into the new school building in April 2026. That makes the building move relevant to families choosing nursery now: classrooms, collection points and lunchtime arrangements changed together, rather than as separate adjustments.
Mathematics has a clear teaching pattern within the early years foundation stage (EYFS). Children learn together using a Mastery Approach: counting, exploring relationships between numbers and developing their understanding of numbers to ten. A session starts with a problem children investigate using resources, before discussing their ideas with a talk partner. Explaining an answer matters alongside finding it.
Questions about similarities, differences and how children can demonstrate their reasoning encourage them to put their thinking into words. In January 2022, Ofsted found that early-years mathematics gave children a strong start, with children attentive during teaching about numbers to ten. The same inspection identified insufficiently systematic phonics teaching across the school and required an approach that would help children read confidently and fluently.
Books provide the school’s broader curriculum framework, with a chosen text connecting learning across subjects. Early-years learning also includes Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Understanding the World. In plain parent terms, that includes learning to value other people and understand differences, alongside the number work.
Outdoor changes. Playground construction included a climbing frame and trim trail, with installation beginning in July 2026. These were school-wide developments; families should distinguish that work from the nursery’s daily learning arrangements.
Lunch gives the whole-day place a different rhythm from a three-hour session. The EYFS lunch period runs from 11:30am to 12:30pm, and Foundation Stage children have food brought to their tables through family service. Eat Culture, Nottingham Catering provides the school meals. Menus rotate over three weeks, with vegetarian food and school sandwiches among the usual choices; Mondays are meat-free.
Emotional support extends to nursery through an ELSA-trained learning mentor. The role includes helping children understand feelings and develop ways to manage them, giving families a route to support when emotions interfere with participation.
For additional learning needs, the school SENCo works with parents, staff and specialist advisers. Support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle, so provision can be reconsidered as a child’s needs change. In the Foundation Stage, children learning English as an additional language receive help to join activities, including visual resources and use of their home language where appropriate.
Attending Southglade’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions process. Nottingham City Schools Admission Team manages school admissions, so choosing nursery and applying for school remain separate decisions.
Morning places run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The 15-hour pattern means attending either mornings or afternoons from Monday to Friday. Whole-day attendance runs from 8:30am to 3:30pm, combining 30 hours with five lunchtime hours; those places are offered only to families meeting the Government eligibility criteria.
Nursery applications use a form, which can also be collected from school reception. For enquiries, contact the school office on 0115 915 5763 or email admin@southglade.nottingham.sch.uk. Foundation Stage children must be collected by an adult over 16. Updates about routines and collection arrangements are communicated through MarvellousMe.
