Nursery at Southwark Primary School

Morning, afternoon or a whole school day: Southwark's nursery gives families three distinct session choices. It sits within Southwark Primary School on Park Lane in Old Basford, Nottingham, where school provision begins at three. An assistant head oversees the early years and Year 1, placing nursery within the school's wider team for younger children.
Personal, social and emotional development gives the early years day its shape. In July 2023, Ofsted found that the early years curriculum addressed children's needs, with familiar routines and children taking an active part in activities. That combination matters for a young child: knowing what happens next supports participation.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Southwark emphasises the characteristics of effective learning. The focus is on how children learn as well as what they learn. Alongside this, the school rules ask children to be kind, respectful and safe, and to try their best. These give adults and children a shared language for everyday behaviour.
Outdoor play has a named school-wide approach: OPAL, or Outdoor Play and Learning. Southwark aims to use its outdoor play spaces for imaginative exploration, physical activity and manageable risk-taking. A shared play charter gives playtimes common expectations. Nursery children also need a warm coat, as children go outside in most weather conditions.
Knowing the children was an early years strength identified in July 2023. Staff understood their needs and gave them opportunities to develop socially and emotionally. For parents, the practical communication routes are classroom-door conversations and Class Dojo messages; a longer discussion can be arranged when needed.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities sits within the wider school. Southwark makes reasonable adjustments to help children participate and aims to tailor support to individual needs. The school office connects families with the SEND coordinator. Safeguarding concerns can also be raised through the office with the designated safeguarding lead or a deputy, giving parents a direct route to the relevant team.
For lunch, the school arrangements allow families to switch between a packed lunch from home and a school dinner. Alliance in Partnership provides the meals, and School Food United handles orders, which must be made before 9:15am each day. Dietary requirements should be raised with the office. Nuts must stay out of school because some children have severe allergies.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process, handled by Nottingham City Council. Applications can be submitted online, by post or by phone.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was midnight on 16 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions: a nursery place is no substitute for completing the school-place application by the relevant deadline.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:40am; afternoons run from 12:10pm to 3:10pm. Both half-day options are labelled 15 hours. The whole-day option runs from 8:45am to 3:10pm, with morning doors opening between 8:40am and 8:45am. Match those collection times to your family's working day.
To express interest, complete the Nursery Expression of Interest Form. Submission adds your child to the nursery waiting list. The office can be reached on 0115 915 0466 or at admin@southwarkprimary.net. Autumn-term school tours can be arranged through the school.
Uniform applies to nursery children: royal-blue knitwear, a white or light-blue shirt or polo, and plain black school shoes form part of the requirements. Correctly coloured clothing is acceptable without a school logo. A second-hand uniform rail sits in the school reception area. Southwark follows Nottingham City's holiday pattern, and parents should telephone the office if delayed for collection.
