At a Glance

Responsibility starts small here: caring for class pets was one example of early-years learning in July 2025. That gives children a practical task with a purpose beyond themselves. The nursery belongs to The Good Shepherd Catholic Primary, Arnold, on Somersby Road in Woodthorpe.

Catholic identity shapes the setting. The school describes love and respect as its guiding Gospel values, while nursery applications are welcomed from Catholic and non-Catholic families. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 1 and 2 July 2025. This is an early-years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Two attendance patterns shape the day: mornings from 8.45am to 11.45am, or the government-funded 30-hour pattern running from 8.45am to 3.30pm, with attendance on at least four days each week. The first creates a regular morning routine; the second includes the bridge between morning and afternoon through lunch club.

The curriculum includes the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. Its practical character is illustrated by children taking responsibility for class pets. In July 2025, children were absorbed in learning activities, and staff tackled obstacles to their progress. Learning and personal development sit together in that early-years picture.

Stories have also supported conversations about feelings. For World Mental Health Day in 2021, nursery children identified dancing and yoga among things that made them happy. Reading The Worrysaurus was followed by making a fairy to take home. This historical example connects a named story, creative activity and children's own ideas about happiness.

Care and Support

Nursery staffing includes teachers and support staff. For children with additional needs, the school works with families and outside agencies; the assistant headteacher is also the acting SENCo. Parents can discuss their child's needs or provision through the office, giving them a direct route into that support structure.

Care continues across the middle of the longer day. Lunch club carries a charge for supervision whenever a child remains from the morning session into the afternoon. Families should ask the school for current charges when planning that attendance pattern.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the normal local-authority process and meet the deadline for their child's admissions round.

For a faith-based application, a Supplementary Information Form and evidence of faith must also reach the school office before the closing date. These documents allow the application to be ranked on faith grounds. The nursery decision and the Reception application therefore need separate attention.

Practical Information

The 15-hour pattern is every morning; the 30-hour placement requires an eligibility code. A nursery application and parent declaration go to the school office, either by email or by handing them in. The contact address is office@goodshepherd.notts.sch.uk, and the telephone number is 0115 926 2983.

Tax-free childcare payments are accepted. Charges are billed after attendance on a half-termly basis and fall due at the end of the relevant term. For families combining funded hours with lunch club, the useful distinction is between the funded attendance pattern and the separately charged care between sessions.

FAQs
