Rhymes, songs and learning to share give Banks Road Nursery its character. This is the nursery provision within Toton Banks Road Infant and Nursery School in Toton, with entry normally in September after a child's third birthday. The emphasis is on the foundations: listening, communicating and becoming comfortable learning alongside other children.
At the Ofsted inspection on 4 and 5 February 2025, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Listening comes before formal reading here. Nursery children explore sounds around them and join in with stories, songs and familiar rhymes. These activities prepare children for later phonics learning, giving a practical purpose to singing and listening together.
Within the early years foundation stage, communication, social development and physical skills were priorities in February 2025. In everyday terms, that included helping children share playthings and take responsibility for tidying. Learning to cooperate is part of the learning itself. Positive habits and routines supported children in concentrating and working together.
Matching activities to the child. In February 2025, staff did not consistently use their understanding of children's existing skills to plan what came next. This affected the consistency of learning inside and outdoors, and children sometimes made less progress than they could. For parents, the useful question is how an activity builds on something their child can already do, rather than simply whether the child enjoys it.
Settling was a strength in February 2025: the youngest children became comfortable quickly and developed the ability to listen to one another, wait their turn and share. These are useful foundations for taking part in a group session.
For the September 2021 starters, the class puppet Cheeky Monkey introduced children to nursery life through a booklet families could read together. It was designed to make staff and routines familiar before starting. That offers a concrete example of preparation involving parents as well as children.
Concerns about a child's progress or wellbeing can be discussed with the class teacher or the school's special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). Contact through the office gives families a route into that conversation.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the normal local authority process; school admissions are administered by Nottinghamshire County Council, while the school handles nursery applications.
Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two decisions. The nursery's work on listening and sounds supports later learning, but educational preparation does not secure admission. Apply by the deadline for the relevant Reception intake.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am, with afternoons from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The nursery operates during term time. Its session model allows parents to choose five sessions across the week, mixing mornings and afternoons, although changing that pattern during the academic year may be restricted. Choose a pattern that can work beyond the first few weeks.
There is some flexibility around the day's outer edges: morning arrival can be between 8.30am and 8.50am, and end-of-day collection between 3pm and 3.30pm.
Additional sessions. Extra places are limited, and existing nursery families must book these a term ahead. They carry a charge; contact the school for current charges. This is an arrangement to plan in advance.
