A three-hour morning gives Whitemoor’s nursery a clear practical shape: children attend from 8:35am to 11:35am, leaving the afternoon outside this session. The nursery is the school’s Foundation Stage 1 provision, within Whitemoor Academy (Primary and Nursery) on Bracknell Crescent in Nottingham. The school’s age range starts at three.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language, stories and early number work give the early years curriculum its substance. In November 2022, staff checked children’s starting knowledge and planned activities around the vocabulary and knowledge they needed next. For parents, this means a starting point based on what children already understand, rather than assuming everyone begins together.
Storytelling supplied a concrete example: children remembered characters from We’re going on a bear hunt. They also had opportunities to develop literacy and number skills. This is the early years foundation stage in practical parent terms: building language and early learning alongside the social skills needed to participate with other children.
SCARF is used from Nursery onwards for relationships and health education. Discussion and circle time are the main forms of these lessons, giving children opportunities to talk about a theme and hear other perspectives. Themes include keeping safe and understanding relationships, so learning extends beyond letters and numbers.
Reading practice. In November 2022, some pupils beginning to read had too little practice with an adult and were catching up too slowly. This finding concerned beginning readers across the school. It makes adult-supported reading a useful topic for conversations about a child’s early learning.
Sharing and taking turns were evident in early years in November 2022; children also apologised when they obstructed one another. These small interactions matter in a group session, where learning includes making space for somebody else.
Parents can arrange a conversation with their child’s teacher through the office when a concern arises. A Family Liaison Officer also helps with children’s behaviour and wellbeing, alongside housing, benefits and debt concerns, and can direct families towards other support. SEND enquiries have a separate contact: senco@whitemoor.nottingham.sch.uk.
During warmer school months, children are asked to bring sunscreen and a hat. That is a practical preparation for families to build into the morning routine.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing the next school place as two separate decisions.
The nursery session runs from 8:35am until 11:35am. An 11:35am finish needs to fit the family’s collection arrangements.
