Eight children at most in a session gives Evertots its defining scale. Everton Heath Primary School’s pre-school caters for children aged 3–4, with morning and afternoon sessions rather than a single undifferentiated booking pattern. For families choosing a first group setting, that small session size is a concrete part of the offer.
The provision belongs to the village primary school in Everton. In March 2024, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than giving Evertots a separate nursery rating.
Play shapes the learning. Children explore activities and topics through their interests, with sessions led by the children and practitioners supporting individual progress. Evertots describes its small groups as a way to adjust support to each child. The emphasis is on exploration at a child’s own pace.
A dedicated outdoor learning space extends that approach beyond the classroom. Resources and activities support discovery through play, giving outdoor exploration a place in the nursery’s learning offer rather than treating it simply as a break.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the foundation for later learning. Concrete examples bring that purpose into focus: in March 2024, pre-school children used photographs and videos to capture their learning. Technology therefore had a practical role in recording what children had done. Across early years, adults frequently read stories to children, helping them develop an enjoyment of books.
Vocabulary development. In March 2024, curriculum planning needed to identify topic and subject vocabulary more precisely, including in early years, and teach and revisit it explicitly. For parents, the relevant issue is how adults help children acquire the words to explain their discoveries as well as make them.
Settling begins before the first session. Families can visit the pre-school, and staff also arrange a home visit before a child joins. These opportunities let parents share their knowledge of their child and begin building familiarity with the setting.
Parents participate throughout the school’s SEND support process, from discussing concerns to planning help and reviewing progress. Support can include individual or small-group work, changes to resources and input from professionals such as speech and language therapists. This gives families a role in shaping support around their child’s needs.
Evertots attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority’s normal admissions process. For September 2027 entry, applications go through the local authority’s online portal.
Nursery attendance does confer a defined priority for that entry year: attending a Trust nursery, where applicable, is the fifth primary oversubscription criterion. It comes after the criteria for looked-after and previously looked-after children, catchment children with siblings, siblings, and catchment residents. Priority is not an assured offer.
Transition support is a separate matter. The school works with Evertots and families through an induction programme to help children prepare for starting school; that collaboration does not replace the Reception application.
Morning and afternoon sessions operate Monday to Friday during term time. All nursery places are government-funded, with 15 universal hours each week available from the term following a child’s third birthday.
The school day starts at 8:40am, and pre-school finishes at 3:00pm; these are the school-day boundaries rather than the individual morning and afternoon session times. Lunch is scheduled between noon and 1:00pm. Gates open at 8:30am and close at 8:45am, giving families a defined morning access window.
