Early reading begins in nursery at South Tawton, giving its youngest children a place in the school's reading culture from the outset. Little Beacons is the school's pre-school provision, with entry from age two. Its identity is distinct within the school: the team includes teaching assistants assigned specifically to Little Beacons.
In June 2022, the pre-school served two- and three-year-olds in a nearby village hall, separate from the main school premises. That is a dated picture of its accommodation. For present-day access, Little Beacons has its own designated gate along Tawton Lane.
Children learn through play within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Their learning here includes the beginnings of reading, which Ofsted identified in nursery on 28 and 29 June 2022. Learning can be adjusted to suit an individual child, so the emphasis is on a child's stage of development rather than expecting everyone to tackle learning in exactly the same way.
Reading is the clearest nursery-specific thread here. At the inspection on 28 and 29 June 2022, Ofsted found that early years children made a positive start, with early reading beginning in nursery. For parents, that places the first steps towards reading within the pre-school experience, before the separate move into Reception.
Little Beacons has teaching assistants attached to the pre-school. For a family considering additional needs, the school's support structure also includes a SEND coordinator and an assistant SEND coordinator. These are roles parents can use when discussing how their child will take part in learning.
South Tawton says it shapes additional support through assessment and work with families and the local authority, extending provision beyond the standard curriculum where necessary. Its explanation of special educational needs and disabilities explicitly includes children below compulsory school age. That makes early concerns relevant now, rather than something to postpone until school entry.
For SEND questions, parents should begin with their child's class teacher. Devon Information Advice and Support (DIAS) also provides independent, impartial advice to families, offering another route for understanding support and the processes involved.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and it confers no attendance-based priority for the 2026–27 intake. Families must make a separate school application, including those whose children already attend an early years setting. Choosing Little Beacons and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Apply through the local authority where your child lives. Devon residents use www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline. The application window for September 2026 entry ran from 15 November 2025 to 15 January 2026; that deadline has passed. Keep the intake year in view when planning the next step.

Little Beacons uses the last gate on the left when heading down Tawton Lane from South Zeal village. This is a specific access instruction for pre-school families, useful when planning the journey and identifying the correct entrance.
Early years provision starts from age two.
The school's pre-school is Little Beacons.
No. It neither guarantees a place nor confers attendance-based priority for the 2026–27 intake. A separate application is required.
