Nursery at Burnt Tree Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Morning sessions, afternoon sessions and some full-time 30-hour places give Burnt Tree’s nursery its practical shape. This is the nursery within Burnt Tree Primary School in Tividale, Oldbury, where children can begin from age three. Families therefore have a choice between a session-based start and the longer pattern offered through its full-time places.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 26 and 27 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection grade.
Curiosity, familiar routines and conversation are the clearest features of the early years day. In November 2024, children formed positive connections with adults and became comfortable with routines promptly. The learning environment encouraged exploration, while adults supported children’s speech. For a child beginning nursery, this combines the reassurance of a recognisable session with opportunities to investigate and communicate.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sits at the beginning of the school’s planned sequence of learning. Knowledge and skills are introduced in a deliberate order, starting in early years. Computing also includes activities away from screens during EYFS play and free-flow time. Digital learning here therefore includes experiences that do not depend on using a device.
Starting nursery includes contact beyond the classroom. The Family Support Worker assists nursery staff with home visits for new starters and supports transition. This gives families a point of contact during the move into nursery, as well as someone who can help with wider difficulties affecting family life.
Confidential advice, referrals to other services and guidance through Early Help are part of that role. Support also includes helping parents understand their child’s learning and development. Oldbury Family Hub visits the school to provide workshops, sessions for children and help for parents, adding another route to family support.
For children with special educational needs, the school’s SENCo coordinates additional provision and works with parents, teachers and other professionals. Early identification is part of the role, making this a relevant contact when parents have concerns about development. These are school-wide support arrangements serving a school that includes the nursery.
Meals and allergies. School meals are charged for children attending nursery full time. Families should contact the school for current charges. SIPS catering cannot promise food free from ingredients that could trigger allergies because cross-contamination remains possible. Parents should tell the school about an allergy, intolerance or other food-related condition so that it can discuss support with SIPS.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Sandwell School Admissions, rather than treating the nursery application as an application for both stages.
The distinction is practical: nursery applications go directly to Burnt Tree, while Reception applications follow the Sandwell route. The Family Support Worker’s transition support is help with change, not an admissions entitlement. Keep preparation for the next stage separate from securing a place.
Applications for nursery go to the school itself. Download the nursery application form, complete it and take it to the school office with the child’s original birth certificate.
The session choices are morning, afternoon and some full-time 30-hour places. Those full-time places are described as limited to some places, so families should not assume that every nursery place follows that pattern. For nursery enquiries or contact with the Family Support Worker, call the school office on 0121 557 2967.
