Nursery at Beever Primary School

Learning to tell a story, put on a coat and play alongside another child gives Beever’s nursery its character. These small steps feature in its I Can curriculum, which combines children’s chosen activities with teaching directed by adults. Independence develops through ordinary tasks as well as planned learning.
Beever Primary School’s nursery unit on Moorby Street, Oldham, admits children in the term following their third birthday. Its nursery sits within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision. Ofsted graded early years Good at the inspection of 26 and 27 April 2022; that judgement covers early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The I Can approach follows a sequence of teaching, practising and applying a skill. For parents, that means children have opportunities to try learning for themselves after an adult introduces it. The EYFS brings together learning about language, movement and relationships with early reading, number, creativity and discovering how the world works.
Nursery goals make this concrete. Children join familiar rhymes, discuss stories and begin linking sentences. They develop number understanding by matching quantities, counting objects and representing numbers with fingers or marks. Pincers, threading equipment and tweezers give small hands practice in control. These are curriculum goals, rather than a claim that each child reaches them at the same pace.
Play also has a social purpose: children progress towards sustaining shared games and responding to other children’s ideas. In April 2022, early-years learning included growing plants, giving children a practical starting point for understanding living things.
The wider school site includes a field, playground, multi-use games area and an all-weather track. Those are school facilities. Within the nursery curriculum, blocks, shape puzzles and mark-making tools supply concrete ways to explore, construct and communicate.
Settling is approached through familiar adults. Nursery learning goals include separating from a main carer with encouragement and seeking reassurance when needed. That makes emotional security part of the learning plan, alongside growing confidence in play.
Families can contribute through Tapestry, stay-and-play sessions and workshops. These give parents ways to share in learning beyond a brief conversation at collection. Nursery children receive fruit and milk free of charge, and children are asked to bring a water bottle each day.
The January 2026 SEND policy sets out how families participate in support decisions. Parents of children on the SEND register are invited to termly Pupil Centered Review meetings, while the teacher and SENDCo agree adjustments and review their effect. The school can involve speech and language therapists, QEST (Quality Education Specialist Teachers) and SAPSS (Sensory and Physical Support Services) when needed. This provides a route for coordinating support around a child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal primary admissions process. Oldham Council handles Beever’s school admissions; families living outside Oldham apply through their own council.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 5pm on 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Keep the Reception application separate from nursery enrolment: familiarity with Beever does not replace the application.
The 2024/2025 prospectus describes a morning nursery model with free part-time places covering 15 hours each week. Its nursery timetable runs from 8:45am to noon. These are dated prospectus arrangements, useful for understanding the morning format.
Nursery application forms come from school. The office can be contacted on 0161 770 7500 or at info@beever.oldham.sch.uk, and the contact page includes an enquiry form.
Collection rules require an adult known to school; an older sibling collecting must be over 16. Parents identify authorised collectors and tell school about changes. The school uniform includes a blue jumper or cardigan, a white shirt or polo and black shoes. Pre-loved uniform can also be requested through the office.
