At a Glance

Animal names, shared stories and paint-covered fingers give Broadfield’s nursery provision its character: language and practical exploration start with the youngest children. Acorns caters for two-year-olds, alongside the nursery for children aged three to four, within Broadfield Primary School on Goddard Street in Oldham.

Acorns has 16 morning and 16 afternoon places. The older nursery offers up to 26 places in each session, including a maximum of eight full-time places subject to funding eligibility and admission criteria. In April 2026, Ofsted judged early years to meet the Expected standard. This is the early-years judgement within the school’s inspection.

The Nursery Day

Communication gives the learning a clear focus. Staff introduce unfamiliar words and use conversation to extend children’s speech and thinking, including support for those learning English as an additional language. Two-year-olds were naming animals in preparation for a farm visit. It is a concrete example of vocabulary connected to an experience children can understand.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning led by adults with children’s own exploration. Art draws inspiration from Access Arts EYFS pathways. In Acorns, children experiment with paint through fingers, brushes and other tools, handle materials and build simple models. Older nursery children explore mixing colours, draw faces with increasing detail and practise cutting paper. These activities connect expression with the hand control needed to use tools.

Books provide starting points for learning, with stories, familiar tales and nursery rhymes included in early years. Technology also has a practical role: remote control toys, phones and metal detectors support exploration. The emphasis is on objects children can use and investigate.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first session. Class teachers arrange home visits before children start Acorns or Nursery, giving families an opportunity to discuss their child. In April 2026, effective relationships with parents helped children settle promptly and participate in learning.

Stay and Play or Stay and Learn sessions offer contact with staff. Nursery parents also have two parent meetings a year, while written progress reports are sent twice yearly. For additional needs, parents can begin with the class teacher and then meet the SENCo to agree support and adjustments. Visual timetables, ear defenders and Now/next boards are among the school’s approaches, with specialist services including Speech Bubble available.

Health routines include the Greater Manchester Supervised Toothbrushing Programme for children aged two to five. With parental consent, children brush daily under nursery staff supervision; families can discuss participation with their child’s key worker. Dental Playbox adds songs, stories and activities about teeth. The setting has achieved the Healthy Eating Award, whose criteria include providing healthy drinks and food. The Nursery Parents’ Course covers sharing, bedtime routines and toilet training, extending preparation into family life.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal local-authority process. For Oldham residents, the route is online at www.oldham.gov.uk/admissions; families living elsewhere apply through their home authority. Applications are made in January, by the exact deadline for the relevant intake.

For September 2026 entry, nursery attendance carried priority under criterion three where a qualifying sibling attended, and criterion four without that sibling link. Higher criteria came first, with distance resolving oversubscription within each criterion. That dated priority did not guarantee admission.

Transition support is separate from allocation: summer visits, discussions between teachers and transition books or leaflets help children prepare for a different class.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Each pattern provides 15 hours weekly. Full-time places are limited to eight and require eligibility for working families funding, so this option depends on both eligibility and allocation.

Collect a nursery application form from school. Visits can be arranged at a mutually convenient time, and enquiries go to 0161 665 3030 or info@broadfield.oldham.sch.uk. Parking is limited; disabled parking can be reserved through the office. The ground floor is accessible, helping families plan a visit.
