Play, stories and room to move give Greenfield’s nursery its character. An enclosed outdoor area connects directly to the classrooms, and children also use a dance studio. These are practical features for families who want movement and outdoor learning built into their child’s session.
This is Greenfield Primary School’s own nursery in Greenfield, Oldham. At the November 2024 inspection, its provision included two-year-olds. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its visit on 12 and 13 November 2024; that judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Hands-on play shapes the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach here combines children’s interests with themes introduced by adults. Learning crosses subject boundaries: music, history and geography begin in nursery, even when staff use different language with young children. The emphasis is on experiences rather than separate subject lessons.
Classrooms were designed with a specialist company. Direct access to the enclosed outdoor area means outdoor learning can take place independently of other year groups’ use of the grounds. The dance studio adds another space for movement. Together, these features give the session scope to extend beyond the classroom.
Books and rhymes are a clear strength in the November 2024 findings. Nursery children, including the youngest group, enjoyed hearing stories, helping them build foundations for later phonics learning. Children in early years also paid attention to teaching and were taught to share and treat others kindly. Learning to listen and learning to get along sit alongside early reading.
Curriculum clarity. In November 2024, some parts of the early years curriculum lacked sufficiently precise learning goals and timing. Consequently, some children were less ready for their next learning steps. This is a material qualification to the positive picture of stories and classroom participation.
A qualified teacher works with early years teaching assistants in the nursery. Families can speak briefly with staff each day, giving them a direct way to pass on concerns or discuss their child.
For concerns about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school’s SEND leader can be reached by telephone or email. That provides a specific contact route for advice. Nursery safeguarding also has a designated staff role, giving families a point of responsibility within the provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Oldham Council is Greenfield’s admission authority, and the admissions page directs parents to the council’s application information and admission arrangements.
For the September 2025 intake, the stated closing time was 5pm on 15 January 2025. That cycle is past. Classroom design provides a separate kind of continuity: nursery and Reception rooms have a similar appearance, intended to make the surroundings familiar to children. Familiarity does not secure admission.
Term-time opening runs from 8:30am to 3:30pm, with part-time, full-time and funded places. Requested hours are discussed with families at their first contact or visit. This is a sessional model, so the agreed pattern matters when planning childcare.
