Listening to everyday sounds is an early step towards reading at Holy Cross. Its part-time nursery sits within a Church of England primary school in Oldham, with a separate nursery entrance on Shaw Street. The provision serves the school's youngest children, starting at age three.
Morning and afternoon sessions give the nursery a clear half-day shape. For families, the practical distinction is the collection time: this is a part-time arrangement to build into the day’s childcare plans.
Play forms part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach. Early years learning also covers music, mathematics and religious education, with religious education identified separately for Nursery. These strands bring together play, early subject learning and the school's religious character.
Reading begins with listening. In March 2025, children in Nursery explored sounds around them as preparation for learning to read. The emphasis at this stage is on noticing sounds before moving further into reading.
In March 2025, early years learning encouraged children to build confidence and become more independent. Planned activities and supportive exchanges with caring staff helped them do so. For a young child, that combines adult support with opportunities to become more self-reliant.
Relationships with adults are an important part of the early years experience. The March 2025 findings give parents a concrete basis for this: staff care, the quality of conversations and planned learning were all strengths within early years.
For day-to-day communication, parents can speak to their child's classroom teacher at the door in the morning or afternoon. Longer conversations can be arranged through the office. Arbor carries school communications, making it another route for keeping track of events.
The school also has a Community and Family Engagement Leader who handles parental queries. Parents with concerns about their child's learning or development are directed to the class teacher, giving families a clear first contact for discussing support.
Attending Holy Cross nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate: families must apply again through the normal Reception application process by the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as two decisions, even though both concern the same school.
The morning session runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; the afternoon runs from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Adults must bring and collect nursery children, using the Shaw Street entrance. Prompt collection matters within this short session pattern.
Nursery uniform is optional. Choices include grey jogging pants, trousers or a skirt, a white polo shirt and a royal blue sweatshirt. The Recycling and Donation Station also holds some second-hand uniform, offering families another option alongside buying clothing.
