Rhymes, poems and shared play give Royton Hall’s nursery its character: an introduction to language and learning within a purpose-built nursery classroom. There are 26 nursery places, with entry in the term after a child’s third birthday. The provision sits within Royton Hall Primary School in Royton, Oldham. At the inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Language gets attention through songs, poetry and nursery rhymes. These activities help children build familiarity with words and sounds before formal reading develops. Books add another route into vocabulary, giving children more language to use and understand. The school uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised for phonics; the nursery’s evidenced preparation centres on listening, rhyming and developing language.
The early years foundation stage combines learning with developing the skills to participate alongside other children. In June 2025, children were absorbed in their learning and eager to take part in play. Sharing and playing together were explicit parts of that experience. These are practical foundations for joining group activities, as well as learning independently.
Learning follows a deliberately planned sequence from early years onwards, so new content builds in an intended order. There is a school-wide caution, however: checks on understanding sometimes failed to identify and tackle gaps before further learning began. This was a finding across the school, rather than a nursery-specific judgement.
For children needing additional help, the school’s SEND arrangements bring parents, the class teacher and the SENDCo into planning support. The process moves through assessment, planning, putting support into practice and reviewing it. Reviews involving families take place in autumn, spring and summer, giving parents recurring opportunities to discuss needs and progress.
Visual timetables help children understand the sequence of their day. Within the school building, a through floor lift and Evac chairs on both staircases support mobility access and emergency evacuation. Individual access needs are considered separately. Complex needs. Space or capacity can sometimes limit the support the school can provide for an individual child. Families and the school then work together and seek advice.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process, using Oldham Council’s website. Treat that application as a distinct step from joining nursery.
The school’s transition arrangements include meeting staff and visiting classes between stages. Additional visits can be planned for children who would benefit from them. Familiarity helps prepare a child for change; it does not secure admission.
Attendance is term time only. Families can choose five mornings or five afternoons each week, covering 15 hours, or a full day for those eligible for 30 hours. Full-time hours run from 8.45am to 3.15pm. The funded offer is 15 hours for all parents and 30 hours for eligible working parents.
