At a Glance

Play, conversation and learning to get along shape the early years at St Herbert's. The nursery takes children aged 3 and over and belongs to the Catholic primary school on Edward Street in Chadderton, Oldham. Its planned nursery admission number is 26 places. Morning, afternoon and full-time attendance give families three distinct session options.

The Nursery Day

Topics and books give learning a common thread. EYFS staff introduce a topic each half term, with related texts chosen each week to shape activities. Children spend time pursuing their own play as well as joining teaching led by adults. Smaller groups follow directed teaching, giving staff opportunities to check understanding and respond to children individually.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for early learning and care. Here, the first nursery term places extra emphasis on its prime areas, with communication, language and personal and social development prominent in the school's approach. For parents, that means talking and learning to manage relationships are central parts of the curriculum. Extended play gives children time to explore an idea, rather than moving straight to another task.

Outdoor provision has a concrete history: Pentagon Play equipment was installed in the Early Years area in July 2018. Within the school's support provision, access to the Sensory Room is one possible adaptation for children with additional needs.

Care and Support

Individual learning plans begin in nursery for children needing extra support. The class teacher is the first contact for concerns about special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), with the SENDCo also available. Support follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review: needs are considered, support is planned and tried, then progress is reviewed. Parents review SEND support plans each term through Person Centred Review meetings, so they can help agree the next targets.

Starting arrangements can include meetings between staff and parents to discuss a child's needs. Where possible, information is gathered from previous settings; contact with health visitors or other professionals is conditional on parental consent. This gives staff a way to carry useful strategies into the nursery. Twice-yearly SEND Coffee Mornings also give parents opportunities to exchange experiences and ask questions.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer admission priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority using the Common Application Form. The closing date is 15th January in the admission year. A Supplementary Information Form is also required for applications under criteria 1 to 4 or 6 to 8, with supporting documentation returned by the deadline.

Preparation for a new class is a separate matter. Children take part in a moving-on afternoon to meet their next teacher and spend time in their next classroom. Transition discussions include routines, interests and medical or additional needs; timing can be adjusted to individual needs through planning reviews. Familiarity helps prepare the child, but it does not determine the admission decision.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Full-time nursery attendance runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Nursery applications go directly to the school, which can be contacted on 0161 633 1318.

Collection is from classroom doors, and Early Years children must leave with a named person over 16. Parents should inform the school promptly if collection will be delayed. School wraparound care operates in the Learning Centre, with enquiries through the same telephone number, selecting option 2.

Parking. Visitor parking at school is very limited, with additional parking across the road at the Parish Centre. Allow for that when planning a visit.
