Books, conversation and growing independence give Werneth's nursery its direction. This is the school's own nursery provision on Coppice Street in Oldham, within a primary school admitting children from age three. The school aims to help children express their ideas confidently, making communication a clear thread through their early learning.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 23 and 24 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The morning session runs from 08:45 to 11:45. Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with an emphasis on children taking an active role and becoming more independent. Autumn learning starts with familiar experiences and the prime areas of development; later work introduces further knowledge and skills. The sequence gives children something recognisable to build on before broadening their experience.
Language gets deliberate attention. Staff select stories, songs and rhymes to introduce vocabulary, while shared reading uses discussion and listening to explore a text's meaning. Teachers also choose five key words in response to children's interests or gaps in their vocabulary. This connects planned teaching with the words children need now. In May 2023, nursery children listened attentively when adults shared stories, songs and rhymes.
Across the early years, enrichment includes encounters with farm animals, watching animals grow and visits from people who help the community. These experiences give children concrete things to talk about. The infant and nursery building also includes covered play areas, a sensory room and a quiet room, providing different spaces alongside classroom learning.
Curriculum delivery. In May 2023, some early years staff lacked the expertise needed to teach parts of the intended curriculum, limiting how well some children learned that content. Staff knowledge and the planning of learning needed further development. Families should weigh this specific concern alongside the Good early years judgement.
A nursery teacher works within an EYFS team that includes teaching assistants and support staff. In May 2023, relationships between adults and early years children were caring and respectful, an important foundation for children learning to spend time away from home.
Preparation begins with the Nursery Parents' Course. Its short videos cover talking, enjoying books, counting, sharing, bedtime routines and toilet training. Families are also encouraged to attend EYFS open and special events so children can become familiar with school. Practical preparation includes managing shoes and coats, opening a lunchbox or using cutlery, and labelling belongings.
An EYFS Nurture Provision for children with autism spectrum needs aims to combine individual support with access to the early years curriculum. Wheelchair access is possible through the nursery's EYFS entrance, and the nursery has accessible toilets and showers. These are concrete features for families considering personal care and mobility needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Every family must make a separate application, including those whose child already attends Werneth's nursery. For entry in September 2027, apply online through Oldham Council at www.oldham.gov.uk/admissions by 15 January 2027 at 5pm.
Preparation for the next stage is a separate matter. Towards the end of nursery, families are directed to Starting Reception advice, with questions about preparation welcomed by the Early Years team. This supports readiness; it does not replace the application.
Morning provision runs from 08:45 to 11:45, and some full-time places are offered for 2026-27. Possible nursery start dates occur across the year, giving families more than one potential entry point.
Nursery enquiries go to the school office, either in person, by telephone on 0161 770 5333 or by email at info@wernethprimary.org.uk. The school is on Coppice Street, Oldham, OL8 4BL.
