Den building, daily stories and counting drinks at snack time give Moorgate's nursery education a practical character. This Lancashire maintained nursery school in Ormskirk serves children aged three to five, with nursery education beginning in the term after their third birthday. Munchkins Childcare provides the on-site childcare alongside it, including care around nursery sessions.
A headteacher, class teacher and teaching assistants form the nursery team. The focus is early education before primary school, with play and adult guidance working together rather than a day built solely around childcare bookings.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) forms the curriculum's basis, supported by Development Matters and Birth to Five guidance. In parent language, this means developing conversation, movement and relationships alongside early reading, number work, creativity and understanding the world. Adults plan activities around children's interests, combining their own teaching with play that children choose, indoors and outside.
Daily Story Time and phonics give language learning a regular place. Phase 1 activities develop listening; some children progress to Phase 2 as their awareness of letters and sounds grows. The Library service supplies books to borrow, and children receive a book bag when they start. Counting how many children want milk or water makes mathematics part of an ordinary routine. Gardening, caring for creatures and making models give children concrete ways to explore ideas.
Two outdoor spaces include a larger garden with a purpose-built Forest School area. Den building, campfires and cooking feature in Forest School sessions, bringing practical tasks into outdoor learning. Moorgate's six Images of the Child express its aspirations, including communication, resilience and solving problems with others.
At the May 2023 inspection, children aged three and four mixed for much of their indoor and outdoor time, with older children drawing younger ones into play. Adults helped children extend vocabulary, including those learning English as an additional language. Curriculum precision. In May 2023, a few learning areas still needed clearer decisions about the knowledge to teach, limiting some children's progress. This is a material qualification to the curriculum's otherwise detailed shape.
Starting nursery is gradual. For children who have not attended Munchkins, the nursery tries to arrange a home visit or parent telephone call in the first week of term. Sessions then increase through a phased start lasting up to four weeks, giving families time to adjust.
The Parent App and social media support communication about learning at home. A Key Person agrees with parents when a child in a Phase 2 group is ready for a decodable book. Fresh fruit is served during nursery sessions, with water or milk to drink; milk is free. For Munchkins care, breakfast and snacks are provided free, while parents supply lunches and dinners. Munchkins charges for neither meals and snacks nor non-food consumables and activities.
SEND support uses a Graduated Response through Wave 1, Wave 2 and Wave 3, with SEND Support or an EHCP where applicable. In May 2023, staff identified additional needs effectively and tailored support so children with SEND learned successfully alongside peers. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that time. Early Help also offers families emotional support, referrals and contact with services such as Housing and Children's Social Care.
Attending Moorgate does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the primary-school application as separate decisions.
Early Help includes support for children changing settings. That practical support concerns the child's move; it does not secure admission.
Nursery sessions run Monday to Friday in term time. Morning attendance is 9am to noon; afternoon options are 1pm to 3pm or 1pm to 4pm. Depending on funded entitlement, children may attend up to ten sessions weekly. The universal offer is 15 hours, with 30 hours subject to eligibility, starting in the term after the third birthday.
Two sessions can be combined in a day, but the noon-to-1pm gap requires a separate Munchkins Childcare Lunch Club booking and Parental Agreement. Munchkins also provides Breakfast Club from 7.30am to 9am and After-School Club from 4pm to 6pm. Holiday childcare places must be arranged beforehand. Funded hours can be shared between nursery and Munchkins; additional nursery sessions outside entitlement carry charges. Contact the school for current charges.
Optional uniform includes polo shirts, fleeces and sweatshirts bearing the gingerbread logo. Orders are taken termly. Arrange a visit by calling 01695 573470 or emailing bursar@moorgate.lancs.sch.uk.
