Nursery at Ormskirk St Anne's Catholic Primary School

At a Glance

A classroom with its own outdoor area, twice-weekly PE and lunch alongside younger school pupils give St Anne's Nursery a day closely connected to school life. This is provision for three- and four-year-olds within Ormskirk St Anne's Catholic Primary School, operating on weekdays during term time.

The nursery occupies a large classroom at the front of the school. Children use facilities beyond their own room and take part in assemblies, sports day and Breakfast with Santa. School uniform is worn here too. For families choosing a school nursery, those shared routines are a concrete part of the experience.

The Nursery Day

Play provides the starting point, with adult-led learning woven into both the morning and afternoon sessions. Circle time focuses on children's development needs; playground activity follows, then a story before lunch or home time. That gives each session a recognisable sequence while leaving room for play.

Outside, children practise moving their bodies through climbing, swinging and running, sometimes through a game of What's the Time Mr Wolf. Their own outdoor area sits alongside opportunities to exercise in the wider school grounds. PE takes place twice a week, adding planned physical activity to playground play.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the nursery's curriculum framework: learning starts here and is planned to build into the next year. The nursery curriculum includes Giggle Tots and Sparkling Stars, with half-termly learning guidance for families. Catholic religious education uses To Know You More Clearly, so faith has an explicit place in learning.

In March 2025, Ofsted found that early-years children developed firm foundations in phonics, with effective additional help for children who needed it. This finding covers the school's early years rather than a separate nursery judgement.

Care and Support

Each child has a key person, giving parents a specific member of staff to contact. Progress conversations take place termly, and staff can also discuss questions at collection or drop-off. Familiar school routines and close work with the Reception team form part of the nursery's preparation for the next stage.

Speech and language support uses Wellcomm assessments. The nursery manager also holds the SENCO role, alongside safeguarding and paediatric first-aid training. The manager's qualifications include Early Years Teaching Status and a degree in Early Years Leadership; all nursery staff have food hygiene qualifications. These are useful specifics for families considering communication needs and everyday care.

Food fits around the session pattern. Breakfast includes toast or cereal, while session snacks can come from home or be ordered through nursery. At lunchtime, children join Key Stage 1 pupils in the school hall. Families can provide a healthy packed lunch or order a kitchen meal; children queue and make their own meal choice, practising a familiar school routine. After-school care includes a snack.

Moving On to Reception

Attending St Anne's Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Lancashire County Council's school-place application route by the normal deadline, and complete a supplementary information form for the school. Learning continuity and admission are separate matters.

The nursery works with the Reception team on the curriculum, and children attending wraparound care share the nursery classroom with Reception children. That offers familiarity with people and routines. It does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Lunch occupies the interval, from 11.45am to 12.30pm. The nursery routine includes breakfast care from 7.45am to 8.45am and after-school care from 3.30pm to 6pm. Staff handle transfers between classes and clubs.

Universal funding provides 15 hours from the term following a child's third birthday. An additional 15 hours requires an eligibility application, allowing qualifying families to use up to 30 funded hours at nursery. Parents must complete a Funding Agreement so the nursery can claim funding. Contact the school for current charges.

For nursery enquiries or a visit, telephone 01695 574697 and ask for the nursery manager. Booking and registration forms support joining. Children wear school uniform; outdoor clothing includes waterproof trousers, a waterproof jacket and Wellington boots, helping them take part in outdoor learning in wet weather.
