Nursery at Tubbenden Primary School

At a Glance

Outdoor play and daily PE give Tubbenden Nursery an active character. Its classroom sits within the main school, with its own entrance, toilets and direct access to an enclosed outdoor space. Children can move between indoor exploration and outdoor play during the session.

The nursery caters for children aged 3 to 5, with some opportunities to begin at 2 provided they turn 3 before the Spring Term starts. There are spaces for up to 48 children, with 24 per session. Families can choose mornings, afternoons or all-day attendance, making this a nursery with several attendance options within a school setting.

The Nursery Day

Creative exploration, outdoor play and PE feature in the children's day. Qualified practitioners support learning across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with planned activities and interactions forming the nursery's own curriculum. Early learning includes building social skills, developing physical skills and learning to communicate, giving children foundations for learning together and expressing their needs. The classroom and outdoor area give children different places to explore, rather than keeping learning indoors.

Specialists add further activities, shaped by children's interests: sensory classes and multisport sit alongside weekly yoga. Nursery children also have access to the school's facilities and experiences, including annual pantomimes, fundraising events and workshops involving music and reading. These connections bring experiences beyond the nursery classroom into their time here.

There is an important curriculum caveat. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 16 and 17 May 2023; this was an early years judgement within the school inspection. In May 2023, the order in which early years knowledge and skills were taught needed more systematic planning, because children's learning was uneven across the EYFS. For parents, the issue is how activities connect and build on earlier learning, as well as what children enjoy doing each day.

Care and Support

Each session includes a healthy snack, with vegetables or fruit among the examples. Cooking activities also introduce healthy eating through something children can do themselves. Food therefore has a place in both the care routine and learning.

Weekly newsletters reach parents through SeeSaw, while themed events invite families to participate in nursery activities. These give parents regular updates and opportunities to share parts of their child's nursery experience. The nursery describes partnership with parents and carers as central to its ethos.

For additional needs, the school's Inclusion Manager coordinates SEND support and provides staff with specialist advice and training. Parents are involved in reviewing support and planning moves to another class or school. That gives families a role in discussing provision and transition, rather than simply receiving an update afterwards.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Tubbenden Primary School. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Bromley's admission rules apply, so nursery attendance should never be treated as securing the next place.

For children joining Reception, transition includes a visit to their new class in the preceding term to meet the teacher and other children. Parents meet the class teacher before their child starts, complete a pre-school checklist and receive an activity record for use at home. These steps help adults share information and children become familiar with their next classroom. They are transition arrangements, separate from the allocation of places.

Practical Information

Term-time opening runs from 08:00 to 17:00. Nursery wraparound care covers 08:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 17:00, alongside morning, afternoon and all-day spaces. The longer opening window can extend attendance around the core nursery period.

Free Entitlement and Extended Hours funding are accepted for eligible two-, three- and four-year-olds. Funding can cover attendance between 09:00 and 15:00, capped at 6 hours per day. Attendance outside that window, or beyond a child's funded entitlement, attracts an hourly charge. Contact the school for current charges.
