Early mathematics and a carefully mapped curriculum give Dimple Well’s nursery its clearest educational character. This is the nursery provision within Dimple Well Infant School and Nursery on Healey Road in Ossett. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 November 2022; that judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The school’s CARES vision links care with enjoyment, respect, ambition and success. It applies to children, staff and parents, giving families a shared language for the school’s expectations.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum sets out the knowledge children are intended to acquire. In November 2022, the early years provision had a clear learning sequence: activities had an educational purpose, with important knowledge identified in advance. For parents, the useful distinction is between simply keeping children occupied and planning what they will learn.
Early mathematics was a particular strength in November 2022. The teaching approach made the intended knowledge explicit, and practice was more established in early years. That gives number learning a clear place alongside the provision’s other learning priorities.
Reading also had a structured approach. In November 2022, early years children encountered sounds in a planned sequence. Reading books corresponded to the phonics they had learned, allowing them to practise with material suited to their knowledge. The emphasis was on building understanding step by step.
Assessment. The November 2022 inspection identified inconsistent use of assessment across the school, with missed opportunities to establish what children understood and adjust teaching. This matters because the next activity should build on a child’s existing knowledge. The concern sits alongside the positive early years findings, rather than cancelling them out.
An Early Years Foundation Stage designated safeguarding lead forms part of the school’s safeguarding team, alongside its main lead and deputy. For a nursery family, that provides an early years role within the wider school structure for safeguarding concerns.
Home and school partnership is part of Dimple Well’s stated approach, with children’s personal, social and emotional development included alongside learning. Teachers and support staff both contribute to that approach. The emphasis gives parents a role in their child’s school experience, while the CARES vision supplies common expectations for adults and children.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to be a decision about the nursery experience itself; a later place at the school remains a separate admissions decision.
