A nursery teacher who also leads early years gives Towngate’s nursery a direct link between classroom teaching and the leadership of its youngest children’s education. Nursery nurses and teaching assistants sit within the early years team. This is the nursery provision at Towngate Primary Academy on Whitley Spring Road in Ossett, part of Inspire Partnership.
The staffing structure places nursery teaching within a wider school team. Alongside early years staff, the academy has a special educational needs coordinator, a learning mentor and safeguarding officers. For families, those roles provide distinct routes for discussing learning needs, emotional wellbeing and concerns about a child’s safety.
Early years learning has a shared curriculum across Inspire Partnership. The trust has developed an early years curriculum and provides staff development on early years practice. That gives the nursery’s teaching a connection to curriculum work beyond its own classroom.
Towngate also aims to help children retain what they learn over time. Its values shape the curriculum, with the school describing high expectations as part of its approach. The emphasis is on building knowledge that children can remember and use as their education continues.
Behaviour expectations have a named structure: the Towngate Pathway. It addresses manners, attention, sitting and walking, while the school’s broader expectations ask children to be safe, respectful and ready. Staff reinforce expectations calmly and positively. For a young child learning how to take part in a group, this gives adults a shared way to explain behaviour and relationships.
Parents can arrange an appointment through the school office to discuss special educational needs or disabilities with the SEND coordinator. Towngate’s approach includes adapting learning to children’s needs, setting suitable challenges and addressing barriers to participation. The school aims to help children work towards their potential, making a conversation about an individual child’s needs a useful starting point.
Family communication also has an open-door approach. Parents are encouraged to discuss concerns, and pastoral staff can direct families towards further support. Across the trust, an inclusion team includes educational psychology and educational welfare roles, bringing these areas into its support structure.
Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the academy’s safeguarding officers through the school telephone number. This gives parents a direct contact route when a concern needs attention.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Wakefield’s Reception application route is the route linked by Towngate. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
