At a Glance

Gardens for younger children beside a 16th Century building give this central Oxford setting a practical thread to its early learning. It belongs to Christ Church Cathedral School, with nursery entry for boys and girls aged three, including children who turn three during their joining term. This is the school's own provision, alongside its pre-preparatory department.

In June 2024, the early years included two nursery classes. That describes the class structure at that point, rather than a promise about the size of your child's group.

The Nursery Day

Early learning connects language, movement and number with things children can actually do. In June 2024, ISI found the nursery and other early-years teaching organised and supplied with suitable learning resources. Adults helped children develop communication skills, giving conversation a place alongside their first steps in reading, writing and maths.

Across the early years, drawing patterns helped children practise the small hand movements needed for writing. A sunflower-growing activity brought counting into a shared task: children worked out how to distribute seeds and pots. These are concrete examples of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in practice, with early skills developed through purposeful activities.

Physical education supported larger movements and fitness, while imaginative play gave children opportunities to practise social skills. Gardens for younger children sit outside the school's 16th Century building, bringing growing plants into the learning environment. The combination gives parents something tangible to consider: early learning here includes practical tasks and physical activity as well as language work.

Care and Support

A taster visit gives a prospective nursery child time with the appropriate class for part of a morning, alongside an informal assessment. It offers an initial experience of the group before joining.

Food across the school includes vegetarian meals on Mondays. Ingredients come from local suppliers where possible, including vegetables from Oxford's Covered Market, connecting school meals with the surrounding city.

Staff supervision. In June 2024, professional support meetings for early-years staff took place, but their scheduling did not fully support staff development needs. More systematic arrangements were recommended, a relevant consideration for families assessing how the nursery team is supported.

The June 2024 inspection also found that admissions outside normal transition points were not reported to the local authority, breaching an early-years information-sharing requirement. In January 2025, notification processes met requirements: the school reported both arrivals and departures outside normal transition points within the required timescales.

Safeguarding also needs its dated context. In January 2025, shortcomings affected school safeguarding policies, attendance procedures and governors' oversight, including requirements applying to early years. By 17 June 2025, the school met the standards examined in the monitoring visit. Safeguarding guidance was reflected in policy, staff had appropriate training, and governors exercised effective oversight.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Contact the school's registrar to confirm the Reception application requirements. Applications are usually considered in application-date order, with siblings receiving priority.

Reception eligibility. Entry is for boys in the September after their fourth birthday and for girls who have a sibling at the school. Families choosing the nursery for a daughter should factor that condition into their longer-term plans.

Practical Information

Morning attendance, full days and combinations of the two allow different weekly patterns. The nursery's arrangements for the 2025/2026 academic year accepted 15 funded hours for eligible children, conditional on the school receiving the funding; the additional 15 hours were not accepted. Three mornings or two full days were covered by the funding voucher under those arrangements. Other patterns carried charges. Ask the school for current charges.

Enquiries go to registrar@cccs.org.uk or 01865 242561. A private tour can be arranged through the enquiry form, giving families a direct way to see the teaching spaces before applying.
