Nursery at East Oxford Primary School

A qualified teacher from the start, play shaped around children's interests and daily outdoor learning give East Oxford Primary School's nursery its character. This is the school's own early years provision on Union Street in Oxford, with one nursery class and room for 26 children in each morning session.
Children can join at the beginning of the term following their third birthday. The nursery emphasises language and social development before school, recognising that children develop at different speeds. For families, the distinctive combination is teacher-led planning alongside opportunities for children to influence their learning.
Play activities cover the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework organising children's early learning and development. A qualified teacher plans these activities from the outset. The nursery describes play as a way to develop children's communication and social skills, giving those everyday interactions a clear purpose.
Within the Foundation Stage, children's own interests help shape the curriculum, and planning responds to them. That gives child-initiated learning a defined place alongside adult planning: children's choices help determine what they explore.
Outdoor learning happens daily. Activities outside reflect the indoor provision, extending learning beyond the classroom rather than treating outdoor time as a separate break. Regular Stay and Play sessions bring parents into Foundation Stage learning, with personalised planning connecting that involvement to each child's development.
Individual development is central to the nursery's stated approach: children are recognised as learning in different ways and at different rates. Personalised Foundation Stage planning provides a practical connection between that approach and the activities children undertake.
For wider family support, the school has a Home-School Link Worker who helps parents and connects them with other agencies. Teachers and senior staff are available at the beginning and end of the school day to discuss circumstances at home that may affect a child. This gives families a route to raise concerns alongside conversations about learning.
The school's support structure also includes a SEND coordinator. Staff receive safeguarding training regularly and undergo checks when recruited; concerns about a child's welfare can be raised through safeguarding@eastoxfordprimary.co.uk.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process. East Oxford works with Oxfordshire County Council on school admissions, and parents can apply online through the Oxfordshire school admissions route.
Nursery applications go directly to the school. Keep these two processes distinct when planning your child's next step: joining the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, five days a week. These are the nursery's hours, so use them when arranging collection and childcare.
The nursery offers 15 funded hours, with another 15 hours for some eligible working families, bringing their entitlement to 30 hours. Extra sessions can also be purchased as wraparound care; contact the school for current charges.
There is no uniform. Comfortable everyday clothing should suit both learning and play, and open-toed footwear is unsuitable. To enquire or book a visit, call 01865 240219 or email admin@eastoxfordprimary.co.uk.
