Woodland play and superhero training give this nursery a character beyond early letters and numbers. Headington Rye Oxford’s nursery serves girls and boys aged 3 to 4 within the Prep School on Pullens Lane, Oxford. Children can join from the term following their third birthday.
At the ISI inspection of 6 to 8 January 2026, the nursery comprised one class with 13 children. That is a snapshot of attendance, rather than a capacity figure. The early years provision combined attention to individual needs with activities covering the required learning areas, giving children both personal support and different ways to explore.
Learning follows children’s interests within a planned early years curriculum. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together: here, the practical examples include language, physical coordination and learning how to share. In January 2026, teaching across early years helped children make good progress, with praise encouraging them to try things independently.
Phonics has a practical purpose. One early years activity used winter vocabulary to challenge children to read and write new words using the sounds they knew. Role play introduces different jobs, while superhero training uses imaginative play to develop kindness and persistence. These activities connect new knowledge with something children can act out or investigate.
Outdoor learning adds a physical dimension. Play equipment and the school’s woodland area help children practise coordination and balance. Indoor and outdoor spaces were appropriately equipped and maintained in January 2026. Staff also demonstrate sharing, taking turns and polite conversation; children practise safety rules outside and listening rules in class. Learning to participate is part of the day.
Individual needs shape the support children receive. In January 2026, early years staff understood those needs and gave children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) additional resources and individual teaching support. This helped them participate and progress, rather than leaving inclusion as an abstract aim.
Wellbeing and safety receive explicit attention from early years leaders and staff, who review their practice to identify changes to teaching. For day pupils, school lunches and morning snacks are included in fees. Necessary educational materials are also included unless otherwise specified, so these everyday elements belong within the ordinary school provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate admissions step and apply through the school’s Prep admissions team. Reception is a main entry point, and the application requirements vary with a child’s age.
Educational continuity is a different matter. Early years teachers and Prep staff exchange information about what children have learned and their next learning needs. That helps the next teaching team build on existing knowledge; it is not an admissions entitlement.
Morning sessions run from 8.30 am to 12.45 pm, afternoons from 11.30 am to 3.20 pm, and full days from 8.30 am to 3.20 pm. The minimum attendance is two full days or three mornings; a combination of one full day and two mornings is also possible.
After Care extends provision until 6.00 pm each school day and carries an additional charge. Fees are collected at the beginning of each term, in advance. Contact admissions@headingtonschool.com for enquiries or to arrange a private tour, and ask the school for current charges.
