Honeybees for two-year-olds and Bumblebees for children aged three to four give Biscovey's nursery its own identity within the infant academy in Par. Language development is a clear thread: WellComm supports communication, alongside an early years curriculum that the school aims to shape around children's interests and existing learning.
Learning covers more than early reading and numbers. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together movement, communication, relationships and emotional development, alongside literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. For parents, that means social and physical development belong alongside the beginnings of academic learning.
WellComm is used in the nursery to support speech and language, while Master the Curricuclum is the named programme for early maths. These give two areas of learning a specific structure. The school aims to start from what children already understand and use their interests to decide their next learning steps.
In December 2024, nursery children had focused speaking and listening support each day, helping them express themselves with greater confidence. Nursery staff had also received extra guidance on child development; activities were pitched to children's individual starting points. The practical significance is that the same task need not be the starting point for every child. Support for communication and the choice of activities both respond to children's development.
A nursery lead works alongside three support staff. This gives the provision a distinct team within the academy, with a leadership role focused on the nursery.
Early identification matters for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). In December 2024, the emphasis on recognising needs during the early years helped children receive support promptly. For a family concerned about development, that makes identifying the need part of the educational provision itself.
Across the academy, ongoing additional needs may lead to an Individual Provision Map, or IPM. These plans identify barriers, support strategies and individual targets. Reviews take place termly with parents, children and teachers involved, and termly SEN Parent Consultations provide a further opportunity to discuss progress. Parents can also arrange a teacher meeting through the office. This gives families a defined way to contribute to support and revisit how it is working.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Keep that application separate from the nursery decision: joining Honeybees or Bumblebees is not a promise of a later school place.
For a nursery place, families complete an Expression of Interest application form, after which a team member makes contact. A waiting list may be relevant if a place cannot be offered immediately.
Visits can be arranged by contacting the academy. The school office can be reached on 01726 812 006 or at hello@biscoveyinfants.org.uk, and the academy's address is Lamellyn Road, Par, Cornwall, PL24 2DB. A visit offers a direct opportunity to meet the setting before making a nursery application.
