Early reading, mathematics and outdoor learning give Eckington’s nursery its clearest character. This is the school’s own provision on School Lane in Eckington, within a Church of England setting. Nursery provision was added in January 2018 for children aged three to four, bringing an earlier starting point into the school.
The school describes outdoor learning as an established part of provision for its younger children. For parents, that makes learning beyond the classroom a relevant part of the nursery’s appeal, alongside the foundations for reading and number work.
Reading and mathematics were strengths of the early years in July 2023. Children developed the basic knowledge needed for subsequent learning, with early reading providing a concrete example: they picked up letter sounds and began using them to read straightforward words and sentences. This gives parents a useful picture of the learning direction, rather than simply a promise of preparation for school.
The curriculum connects knowledge and skills with the vocabulary children need to understand them. In the early years, that means the first steps in reading and mathematics sit within a planned sequence of learning. The July 2023 findings also identified children’s understanding of routines and expectations, giving the learning day a familiar structure.
Outdoor learning is part of the picture too. In July 2023, the school playground had equipment for play, and children across the age groups played together under staff supervision. That provides a physical setting for play and contact with older children, alongside the early years’ classroom learning.
Assessment. In July 2023, the school needed to strengthen checks on children’s retained learning in foundation subjects. This was a school-wide improvement point, rather than a separate nursery judgement; it matters when considering how learning beyond reading and mathematics is followed through.
A nationally qualified special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo) forms part of the school’s support structure. Parents are informed when staff identify special educational needs and are invited to termly reviews. Those meetings give families a regular opportunity to contribute to discussions about their child’s support.
Families are also encouraged to share concerns and any family history of learning difficulties. The school aims to identify difficulties early and work with parents, making communication a practical part of support rather than leaving concerns solely to staff.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application to Worcestershire’s local authority, returning it before the January deadline preceding entry. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are distinct decisions, so parents should keep the school application deadline in their plans.
The school office handles enquiries and can arrange a school visit at a mutually convenient time. Call 01386 750666 or email office@eckingtonfirst.worcs.sch.uk. A visit offers families an opportunity to discuss their child and see the school during its working day.
