An early start within a Church of England school gives St Barnabas preschool its identity. At the November 2023 inspection, the school provided 12 additional preschool places for children aged two to four. This is school-attached provision in Drakes Broughton, on Stonebow Road.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 8 and 9 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Clear routines are a concrete feature of early years life here. In November 2023, staff established predictable routines for the youngest children, giving them a framework for taking part in learning.
Early reading begins with phonics: children learn how letters relate to sounds, following an ordered sequence from the early years onwards. That gives learning to read a defined starting point.
Learning steps. In November 2023, some subjects lacked sufficiently precise steps at the earliest stages, which sometimes restricted learning. The required improvement was to define those steps more clearly from the beginning. For parents, the useful distinction is between having activities planned and knowing exactly what each activity should help a child learn.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), support follows a staged process involving the family, teaching staff and the SEND coordinator. Teaching is adapted first; where learning gaps persist, the coordinator can provide further assessment and advice. Support can include work in small groups or individually, so the response can change with the child's needs.
Assessment, planning, action and review take place in a termly cycle. Parents help agree targets and later discuss the effect of the support. This gives families a regular opportunity to influence the next steps rather than simply receive an update.
Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology and Occupational Therapy are among the services that may be approached for further advice. Parental permission is sought for each external referral. Where a disability special educational need has been identified before a child joins, the SEND coordinator arranges a home visit to help plan the move around that child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Preparation for starting school includes a summer-term parent meeting, followed by children's introductory sessions. Children meet classroom staff, explore the learning spaces and get to know classmates. Both indoor and outdoor Reception learning areas form part of this introduction.
Preschool Packs add a home element: a storybook comes with activity suggestions, and children receive a booklet about school life. These arrangements help children become familiar with the next stage; they do not secure admission.
