Calm play, with adults showing children how to take part, gives Eye’s early years provision its character. The preschool belongs to Eye CofE Primary School on Eyebury Road in Eye, Peterborough, and the provision includes children aged two. It is an early starting point within the school, with learning beginning through supported activities.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than being a separate nursery rating. For parents, the useful detail behind it is the combination of trained staff, absorbed play and children developing foundations for later learning.
Play has a teaching purpose here. In June 2025, children were settled and engaged in activities, while adults demonstrated what to do and helped them participate. Staff guided children through the beginnings of their development. This gives parents a concrete picture of learning through activity, with adult involvement helping children build knowledge and habits as they play.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum starts this learning before formal school subjects take over. Eye uses the named area investigate to bring together the beginnings of geography, science and history. The practical implication is that these subjects start with foundational understanding, rather than waiting until children encounter them as separate lessons.
The preschool also has its own Curriculum Learning Goals document. Alongside the June 2025 findings, that places the emphasis on purposeful early learning: children’s play is supported by a curriculum, and staff help them develop the skills and attitudes needed for their next stage.
Adult support is part of the activity itself. The June 2025 early years findings describe staff with specialist training guiding children’s development and supporting their play. For a young child, this means help taking part as well as something to do.
Parents can contact the main office for general enquiries. Emails are passed to the appropriate member of staff, giving families a route into the school team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. Eye’s admissions page directs parents to Peterborough City Council, either online or using a council application form, and gives January before the September intake as the application deadline. The local authority allocates places, so choosing the preschool and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Familiarity is addressed through transition activities. Before children start school, Reception teachers and teaching assistants offer home visits so parents can talk privately and children can begin getting to know their teacher. Stay and play sessions and half-day visits also introduce children to the setting. These are preparation for starting school, rather than an admissions advantage.
