Speech and language support gives Leighton’s preschool a specific focus: children have a Wellcomm assessment when they join, helping practitioners understand their communication development. This is the school’s own preschool in Orton Malborne, Peterborough, with provision for two-year-olds. Support begins with understanding the individual child.
Communication is a concrete starting point for learning here. The Wellcomm baseline assessment looks at speech and language development, giving staff a starting picture of a child’s needs. For parents, it provides a focus for conversations about how their child communicates and what support might help.
In June 2024, Ofsted found that staff established routines and positive behaviour in preschool and early years, helping the youngest children settle into learning. Those everyday habits matter: learning how to respond to expectations is part of becoming ready to participate in the session.
The preschool manager holds a Level 3 Early years SENDCo Coordinator qualification. Practitioners can make referrals to occupational therapy, speech and language services, autism outreach and early years specialists. That gives families several routes to specialist input where a child needs additional help.
Children joining between the ages of two and three receive a two-year-old progress check. It summarises development and the support already introduced, with suggestions for continuing that help at home. Parents therefore have something practical to work from, alongside conversations with the preschool team. Workshops and informal discussions also form part of this partnership, and practitioners direct families towards support from the local authority’s early years team.
Tapestry gives every child an online learning journal that parents can access to follow progress. Class Dojo handles reminders and messages. The two apps serve different purposes: one lets families follow learning, while the other carries day-to-day communication.
Attending the preschool does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process. Peterborough City Council allocates Leighton’s Reception places, so the decision sits with the local authority rather than the preschool team.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Use the council’s primary school admissions route for the relevant entry year, keeping the Reception application separate from arrangements for preschool attendance. Choosing the preschool and applying for a school place are distinct decisions.

The preschool’s Funding Information page links to the Best start in life hub and a Funding Application. These provide a route into funding information and the application process.
