Nursery at Old Fletton Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Five mornings, a teacher-led class and an emphasis on conversation give Old Fletton’s nursery its character. This local authority maintained provision occupies space inside the main school building, with a qualified teacher supported by teaching assistants. Children can join from three and remain until the July before starting primary school; each session has room for up to 26 children.

The nursery operates under the school’s registration. Ofsted’s January 2026 assessment placed early years at Expected standard, covering the school’s early years provision rather than awarding the nursery a separate grade.

The Nursery Day

Books and language give the morning a clear focus. Book Talk includes nursery children, with texts explored individually or in small groups to build understanding and vocabulary. That gives children opportunities to discuss what a story means, alongside listening to it.

The nursery’s language guidance uses 100 words supplied by the local Speech and Language Department. Pictures, actions and repeated use in conversation help families practise these words. For children who use another language at home, the guidance encourages discussing meanings in that language too. Home language has a place in this work.

Early years learning also includes the social business of sharing materials, waiting for a turn and cooperating with other children. In January 2026, children in Nursery and Reception settled into classroom routines successfully, while caring exchanges with adults helped them develop language and feel secure. These are practical foundations for participating in a group.

Teaching consistency. The early years improvement priority in January 2026 was to make teaching consistently effective. Families should weigh that continuing work alongside the positive findings about settling and adult relationships.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first session. Staff arrange a home visit, followed by a taster session with the child, before agreeing a start date. This gives families opportunities to share information and children a chance to experience the class before their regular attendance begins.

Morning snacks, when offered, are free; the nursery does not serve meals. Parents supply nappies and suncream, while wipes and nappy sacks can be supplied free. These arrangements make the division of everyday care supplies clear.

Speech or communication concerns can be discussed with the class teacher. The school’s SENCO also works with families and outside professionals, including the Speech and Language Team and local authority services supporting children under five. This gives parents a route for discussing additional support early.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Peterborough City Council. The council’s 2026/27 Reception oversubscription criteria do not give priority for attending the nursery, so choosing this class should be a decision about the nursery experience itself.

For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. After a Reception offer, the school arranges parent meetings, Stay and Play and taster sessions. These help children and families prepare for the change; they are separate from allocating places.

Practical Information

Attendance follows a term-time pattern of five morning sessions, totalling 15 hours each week. Sessions begin at 8:50am. This is a morning childcare arrangement, so families needing longer coverage must plan around that pattern.

Universal funding starts in the term after a child’s third birthday and covers the nursery’s 15-hour week, subject to completing the supplied forms. Families eligible for 30 funded hours can use their remaining entitlement with another setting or a childminder. Starting before funding eligibility may involve paid sessions; contact the school for current charges. Extra trips or activities may involve voluntary contributions, with advance notice.

The main office handles nursery enquiries on 01733 554457. For an in-person enquiry, the office welcomes families during school hours, from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Visits before registration can be arranged through the office, giving families a direct way to explore the provision.
