Play is given serious purpose at Pinner Wood. This school-based nursery is for children aged three and four, within an Early Years setting that continues into Reception. Families can choose a morning or afternoon pattern using the universal funded entitlement, while eligible families can apply for a longer funded day.
The nursery sits inside a mixed state primary school in Pinner. Its character comes from the school's own Curricular Goals, which connect practical life skills with the values Choose Kind, Dream Big and Step Up. This gives the provision a recognisable identity rather than treating nursery as a waiting room for formal school.
Children learn through planned, purposeful play, balancing activities they initiate with work guided by adults. The seven EYFS areas cover communication, physical and personal development alongside literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts. Pinner Wood also uses the Characteristics of Effective Learning: exploring, persisting and developing ideas. In practice, this is designed to build independence as well as knowledge.
Choice matters in the learning environment. Children can decide where to work, talk through those choices and use resources in different contexts. Outdoor learning is planned with the same care as work indoors. The published approach describes both quiet, reflective areas and busier spaces for movement, imagination and large-scale experiences. That variety gives children room to take supported risks, investigate and switch between energetic and concentrated play.
Early literacy and mathematics have clear foundations. Children hear and identify sounds in songs, rhymes and stories, while daily mathematical teaching is reinforced through opportunities across the day. Ofsted's December 2023 inspection specifically found that early-years children build vocabulary and number understanding in a carefully sequenced curriculum. Inspectors also reported high expectations from the start of Nursery and well-established routines.
Staff plan from each child's needs, interests and development. Where SEND support may be needed, the school says practitioners consider specialist help and links with other services.
Family communication begins before the first full day. Parents are invited to an induction meeting, and children can spend time with their new teacher in the classroom before starting. Staff are available around the school day for conversations, while workshops, drop-in sessions and parents' evenings provide more structured contact. Familiar classrooms and a shared Early Years approach can make the move feel coherent, but this is pastoral continuity, not an admissions advantage. Attending Pinner Wood Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Harrow Council, and a child will not receive a place automatically.
