Story time and the first steps in phonics give Wembury Class a clear identity within Beechwood Primary Academy. This is the school's own nursery in Southway, Plymouth, taking children from age 3. Wembury belongs to the early years provision, with teaching organised across Wembury and Smeaton classes.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 to 9 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Read Write Inc. starts in Nursery. Children learn sounds and practise joining them together to read and spell, giving early reading a recognisable sequence. Sessions are expected daily, with staff checking learning during each session and a further assessment once per half term. Groups can change to reflect children's stage of learning. The practical benefit is teaching that can respond to how a child is progressing.
Daily story time brings a different rhythm: each class hears its teacher read, with stories introducing different authors and kinds of writing. Reading therefore includes both practising sounds and enjoying a book together. At school level, the Owl Reading Scheme encourages reading at home and in class; wooden Owl Reading Trees in the hall display children's reading achievements.
In October 2024, children in early years were learning classroom routines and responding to adults' instructions. Staff helped them become familiar with expectations quickly. These everyday habits matter alongside early literacy: listening and understanding a routine are part of becoming comfortable in a school setting.
Settling was a positive feature of early years in October 2024, with children adjusting well to school life. Adults helped them understand the daily expectations, giving the beginning of their school experience a predictable structure.
Beechwood uses CPI's trauma-informed approach. The school says staff learn to recognise signs that children are struggling and respond calmly, aiming to help them feel secure and understood. Child protection training takes place at induction, followed by annual external training. Families can arrange a conversation with safeguarding leaders through the main office.
SEND support. In October 2024, support across the school varied, and some staff lacked sufficient training to adapt learning effectively. Many pupils with SEND received too little help to reach their potential, limiting their progress. The trust was required to ensure every member of staff had suitable training to support these pupils' learning. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a nursery-specific finding. For families whose child needs additional help, the practical issue is how staff translate information about that child into suitable learning support.
Nursery lunch is at 11:20am, providing a fixed point in the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing Wembury Class and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
