Play leads the learning at Bright Beginnings, Boringdon Primary School’s preschool for children aged 3–4 in Plympton. Exploration and imagination shape its curriculum, with room for children to develop at their own pace. The preschool aims to build curiosity and readiness for school through practical experiences rather than making early learning solely about academic skills.
A qualified teacher leads the provision, with oversight from the school’s EYFS team. Its preschool staffing structure also includes a teaching assistant and an administrator. That gives families a distinct preschool team within the wider primary school.
Hands-on activity is the starting point. Bright Beginnings combines learning through play with attention to children’s emotional, social and academic development. For parents, the emphasis is on how a child learns and relates to others as well as what they know.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings these strands together. Personal, emotional and social development sit alongside physical development and communication and language. Literacy, mathematics, expressive arts and design, and understanding the world complete the framework. These areas connect: conversation during play can develop language while children explore ideas and relationships.
Boringdon’s early years approach gives children scope to initiate activities. Adults watch their play and judge when to join the conversation, helping them extend an idea or develop their thinking. The school aims to use experiences outdoors and indoors to encourage exploration. This places adult interaction alongside children’s own choices, rather than treating play as time apart from learning.
In November 2023, Ofsted found that the school’s early years curriculum built learning in a deliberate sequence. That finding concerns the school’s early years provision at that time.
Support for additional needs sits within the school’s wider arrangements. Parents can discuss concerns with the class teacher or SENCo, and Boringdon emphasises identifying needs early. Support follows a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review, so decisions can be reconsidered as staff understand a child’s needs more fully.
The Pastoral Team also provides a Padlet with activities, advice, courses and resources for families. This offers a practical way to explore support beyond a conversation with staff. Across the school, staff receive safeguarding training annually, supplemented by updates during the year.
Attending Bright Beginnings does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process, using a common application form submitted to the local authority. Nursery attendance gives no priority under Boringdon’s oversubscription criteria. Keep the preschool decision and the Reception application separate.
For preparation at home, teachers produce booklets to help children become familiar with their next class. This is transition support, not an admissions advantage.
Bright Beginnings has optional extras that parents may choose to contribute towards or pay for. Contact nursery@bps.westst.org.uk for current charges and questions about funding or payments.
