An outdoor learning area of its own and a clear emphasis on children’s talk give Elburton’s pre-school its character. This is the nursery provision within Elburton Primary School in Plymouth, forming part of the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Children can join the term after their third birthday.
At the Ofsted inspection on 19 to 20 November 2024, early years provision was judged Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately graded nursery.
Play and adult teaching work together here. The curriculum draws on Development Matters and the EYFS Statutory Framework, with adults teaching skills that children then practise independently through planned classroom activities. Learning takes place indoors and outside, including the pre-school’s own outdoor learning area. Children have space to explore beyond the classroom.
The EYFS covers physical development, relationships and emotions, and communication, alongside maths, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. In parent language, learning to explain an idea, manage a friendship or use the hands confidently belongs alongside early number and reading work. These are connected parts of the nursery curriculum.
Stories give topics their focus. Children explore books and retell them, with related activities extending that learning into play. In November 2024, language development was a priority from pre-school onwards: carefully designed activities encouraged children to expand their talk and express both ideas and needs. This gives conversation a practical purpose.
Across early years, repeated poems, rhymes and familiar tales supported early reading in November 2024. Children also developed coordination and hand control through play, while imaginative activities helped them make sense of the world. Social learning mattered too: children learnt to take turns, share and build friendships. The day’s learning reaches beyond letters and numbers.
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), including those in early years, received exceptional support in November 2024. Staff identified individual strengths and needs closely and planned learning accordingly, helping children participate fully. For a parent considering additional support, that is a concrete strength of the early years provision.
The team includes an Early Years Lead Practitioner and pre-school teaching assistants. Within the wider school, the SENCO also holds an assistant headteacher role, bringing inclusion into the leadership team.
Class Dojo connects learning with home. Parents can access their child’s online portfolio and add photographs or videos from optional weekly home activities. A curriculum overview each half term explains forthcoming learning and suggests related activities for home, giving families specific ways to join in.
Reception requires a separate application. Attending Elburton’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
Pre-school registration uses an online form. Enquiries can go directly to the pre-school administrator at preschool@elburtonprimary.co.uk, giving families a contact specifically for this provision.
