Nursery at Mount Street Primary School

An early start within a primary school shapes Mount Street’s nursery: children can join from age two, with an early years team that combines teaching, special educational needs coordination and safeguarding responsibilities. The provision belongs to Mount Street Primary School in Greenbank, Plymouth. This is a school nursery, with support organised within the wider school.
At the inspection on 24 and 25 January 2023, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Reading provides the clearest picture of the teaching approach. In January 2023, teachers working in early years had expertise in reading and followed a consistent approach to teaching it. For a young child, that means the adults introducing books and early reading share a method, giving this part of learning continuity.
Story sharing extends to home learning. Me2 and Nursery story resources include Goldilocks And The Three Bears, alongside stories for families to read or listen to together. These give parents a concrete way to join in with their child’s interest in stories.
The early years leadership role includes responsibility for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), alongside deputy safeguarding leadership. Bringing these responsibilities together gives families an early years contact for discussions about additional needs and welfare.
Parents can contact the school’s SENCO team on 01752 205091 or email senco@mountstreetpri.co.uk. Mount Street says its support extends to children from age two, regardless of need or ability, and aims to help children participate equally and progress. Families can therefore begin those conversations at nursery age.
Wider school support includes parenting advice on Monday and Friday afternoons. A monthly parent meeting with the SENCO team also brings in support from agencies such as Livewell. This adds a route for discussing family needs alongside educational ones. As a School of Sanctuary, Mount Street aims to make children and families of different backgrounds feel welcome and valued.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority’s common application form, using the normal admissions process.
There is a conditional nursery priority: children attending Mount Street’s nursery qualify for this oversubscription category only when, at application, they receive service premium, pupil premium or early years pupil premium. A supplementary information form is required. This category comes after looked-after or previously looked-after children, exceptional medical or social need, and siblings. It is a priority category, not a promise of admission.
For enquiries about joining, call 01752 205091. Visits to the school can be arranged by calling the office for an appointment, giving families an opportunity to see the setting before deciding.
Reception application queries can also go to Plymouth’s admissions team on 01752 307469 or primary.admissions@plymouth.gov.uk. Keep that application separate from arrangements for attending nursery.
