Language, practical play and movement give this nursery its character. Mount Wise Community Primary School’s provision serves two-, three- and four-year-olds in Devonport, Plymouth. Its early years groups include Rising 3’s (Chicks) and Nursery/Foundation (Ducks), placing the youngest children within the school’s early years structure.
In April 2022, Ofsted found that the nursery’s emphasis on language helped children prepare for Reception. Adult-guided learning and thoughtful questioning supported children’s thinking: conversation has a clear educational purpose here.
Play provides much of the learning for children under five, with topics connecting activities and more formal work introduced gradually. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Development Matters guide curriculum planning. In parent language, the nursery combines learning to communicate, move and manage relationships with early literacy, maths, creative expression and discovery about the world.
Creative work gives children room to make choices. They explore materials and make their own creations, while projects involving the wider school give some of that work an audience beyond the classroom. Making something to share adds a purpose to experimenting with materials.
Movement has named activities rather than a vague promise of physical development. Write Dance develops larger movements, while finger gym exercises strengthen fingers. Large play equipment gives children opportunities to practise physical skills too. These activities address both whole-body coordination and smaller hand movements.
Adults track development through observations and assessments, recording these in Tapestry, the online learning journal. This connects everyday activity with curriculum planning: what children do and how they develop both receive attention.
Family partnership is part of the school’s approach to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The school aims to personalise support by working with families to understand each child. Its pastoral structure includes a SEND coordinator and a Children and Family Support Worker, giving families distinct roles to approach about learning needs and wider support.
Speech and language support. In April 2022, access to specialist help for pupils with speech and language needs across the school was insufficient. This matters alongside the nursery’s positive language findings: families whose children need specialist input should distinguish everyday language teaching from specialist provision.
The pastoral team provides early help for children and families. Mount Wise also participates in Operation Encompass, through which police notify a school contact before the following school day when children have experienced a domestic abuse incident. That arrangement enables school staff to receive information relevant to a child’s care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admission process, using the common application form submitted to Plymouth City Council.
There is a conditional priority for some nursery children when the school is oversubscribed. At application, children attending Mount Wise’s nursery qualify for this category if they receive service premium, pupil premium or early years pupil premium. This category follows siblings and precedes children of staff. A supplementary information form is required for this nursery criterion. Attendance alone does not confer that priority, and the criterion does not guarantee an offer.
The nursery’s language preparation is an educational benefit. It should be considered separately from the allocation of Reception places.
