In June 2023, story acting, balanceability and Family Friday gave Pelynt’s early years provision its character: language, movement and contact with families. The pre-school belongs to Pelynt Primary Academy in rural Pelynt village, near Looe, within a school and pre-school serving children aged 2–11. It is a school setting from the youngest years.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 20 and 21 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the academy; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Books become something children do, rather than simply hear. In June 2023, early years children enjoyed telling stories again and performing them, while adults demonstrated different ways of using language during book sharing. This gives children practical opportunities to try vocabulary and express a story in their own words. Speaking and acting work together.
Movement has a named activity too. Balanceability helped early years children develop control of their larger movements in June 2023. Physical development therefore had a concrete place alongside language: children practised using their bodies as well as their voices.
Early years foundation stage (EYFS) learning also includes learning to manage life alongside other children. In June 2023, children followed familiar routines, behaved politely and shared with one another in calm surroundings. These everyday habits matter for a young child learning how to participate in a group. The day’s structure supported social learning as well as activities.
At the June 2023 inspection, parents of early years children valued the Family Friday event. For families, that connection matters alongside what children do during their sessions.
Across the academy, the school aims to recognise additional needs early through classroom observations, assessment and conversations with parents. Teachers and teaching assistants receive training in special educational needs, and the coordinator works with them on support. Possible help includes smaller teaching groups, extra assistance in class and specialist resources. Speech and Language Therapy, Educational Psychology and the Cognition and Learning Service are among the outside services involved. These are school-wide arrangements, with the child’s teacher the first contact for learning-support discussions.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Cornwall Council School Admissions. The application window runs from September to January, so choosing the pre-school and applying for school are distinct decisions.
Reception application. A nursery place does not replace the council application. Keep that separate step in the family calendar rather than treating continued attendance as automatic.
