Nursery at Pomphlett Primary School

A building of its own, secure outdoor play and access to the school's pirate ship give Pomphlett Preschool a distinct place within primary school life. Children can join from their third birthday. The preschool occupies its own building on Pomphlett Primary School's site in Plymstock, giving younger children a separate base while keeping school facilities within reach.
Play shapes the learning. Staff join children in activities, follow their interests and help them extend what they can already do. A large main room accommodates open-ended creative activities, while smaller rooms provide space for snacks and other activities. This gives the day different spaces and purposes rather than keeping everything in one room.
Outside, the preschool's secure areas support physical play and the development of large movements. Children also have access to the playing field, playground, school hall, pirate ship and outdoor learning area. Wellies and a puddle suit are suggested for outdoor adventure time, making practical clothing part of preparing for the day.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together children's development and early learning. Here, conversation, stories and role play give children ways to practise language, while play allows adults to build on their interests. Jigsaw 3–11 is the school's named programme for personal, social and health education, sequenced from early years onwards.
At the April 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that adults supported early development skilfully and established children's enthusiasm for books and rhyme. Children in early years also followed clear routines, giving their activities a predictable framework.
Each child has a key person who helps them settle and works with their family to follow their development. Before starting, parent and child attend a settling-in session together. Sharing interests and existing skills gives staff a starting point for planning learning.
Seesaw connects parents with the team and lets families share photographs and videos from home. Floor books gather photographs and observations of preschool experiences. An open-door approach also allows parents to discuss concerns and celebrate progress.
For lunch, children can bring a packed meal or choose a school dinner. Preschool children eat alongside Foundation Stage children in the lunch hall, providing everyday contact with other children and school staff. Independence is encouraged through managing outdoor clothing and using the toilet.
Additional needs are supported through the school's SEND team, whose remit includes preschool. Families contribute to individual support plans, and help is reviewed through an assess, plan, do, review cycle. In April 2022, identification of additional needs began in early years, with staff and external agencies working together. This makes early discussion of a child's needs useful before support is planned.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Plymouth City Council's School Admissions Team. Applications can be made online; the process normally closes in mid January before the September start.
Transition support is a separate matter. The SEND coordinator and Foundation Stage teachers work with preschools to arrange enhanced transitions where needed, involving families and relevant professionals. Tailored support is reviewed when the child starts. Familiarity and preparation help with the change, but do not replace the admissions application.
Morning sessions run from 8:45 to 11:45, with afternoon sessions from 12:15 to 15:15. Full-day attendance is also offered, and Breakfast and After School club is available to preschool children.
Fifteen funded hours begin in the term after a child's third birthday; some three- and four-year-olds qualify for thirty hours and parents must supply a valid eligibility code. For children using either funded entitlement across a full day, the additional half hour of childcare is charged. School dinners also carry a charge. Contact the school for current charges; payments are handled through Arbor.
Access is on foot through Howard Road, with vehicles excluded from the school site. A video intercom controls access at the preschool gate. For enquiries, contact office@pomphlettprimary.co.uk or telephone 01752 408966.
