Two stories a day give language a clear place in nursery life at St Peter's CofE Primary School in Plymouth. Books, conversation and play work together here: adults introduce vocabulary during children's activities, then explore words and pictures in individual reading time. The emphasis is on learning to communicate.
The nursery caters for children aged two, three and four within a Church of England primary school on Rendle Street. In February 2024, Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Play shapes the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Staff use what they know about each child's interests, previous experiences and development to decide the next learning step during an activity. For parents, this means the curriculum combines planned learning with responses to what a child is doing and finding difficult.
Language has concrete routines behind it. Alongside the two daily stories, children read individually with an adult at least twice a week, discussing illustrations and unfamiliar vocabulary. In February 2024, nursery children were developing their vocabulary through stories and rhymes, with adults demonstrating complete sentences. Physical learning also developed balance, body stability and strength.
Read Write Inc begins in Nursery through letter formation rhymes and Fred Games. Fred Talk introduces the idea of hearing separate sounds and joining them into a word. Art brings a different kind of independence: early years children can choose paper, paints and sketchbooks to experiment and revisit skills. Weekly social circle times encourage nursery children to listen, share and treat others kindly, with opportunities to practise those habits during play.
A nursery teacher and nursery teaching assistants form the nursery team, alongside an Early Years Pastoral Lead. The wider school also has an Inclusion Teacher and a Parent Support Advisor who holds assistant SENDCo responsibilities. These roles give families identifiable points of contact for conversations about care and additional needs.
Infant Language Link assessments help staff identify difficulties with understanding language and determine where targeted early support is needed. Learning decisions also draw on observations during play, so staff can consider both the next step and the reason a child is struggling.
CATERed provides the school's meals, with a packed lunch from home as an alternative. The early years classroom has a meal time assistant. This places lunchtime support within the early years staffing structure.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline.
Learning preparation is a separate matter. During the summer term, nursery children due to start Reception that autumn are introduced to initial sounds through daily sessions lasting five minutes. This adds a short, focused phonics routine before the next stage.
