Sounds, conversation and a story before home give Weston Mill’s nursery day its character. This is school-attached provision on Ferndale Road in Plymouth, with places for two-year-olds. Early reading is a clear strength: in November 2024, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good and found that nursery children developed their understanding of sounds effectively. That judgement covers early years within the school.
An early years teacher also holds an assistant head role, linking teaching with school leadership. For parents choosing an early start in a school setting, the strongest reasons to consider this nursery are its sound work and clearly structured daily routine.
Early learning and registration begin as classroom doors open. Morning activities run from 9am until 11.30am, including a snack, followed by lunch until noon. Afternoon activities continue until 3pm and include another snack. The final part of the day brings a story, toileting and preparation for home. Learning and care have their own places in the timetable.
The early years curriculum gives children repeated opportunities to talk, helping them express ideas and consider other viewpoints. Reading work starts with sounds: the school uses RWI from the beginning of children’s learning to develop sound knowledge and blending. In November 2024, nursery sound teaching was effective, while early years reading teaching was also strong. For a young child, this means that conversation and the building blocks of reading are substantial parts of learning here.
The Discovery List begins in nursery. The school aims to give children these experiences across their time at Weston Mill, making the nursery the starting point for a longer programme of learning opportunities.
Snacks sit within both activity periods, and lunch has a separate slot. Toileting is included in preparation for home, alongside story time. These routines make everyday care part of the nursery timetable rather than an incidental addition.
Parents can discuss concerns about learning or wellbeing with the class teacher or SENCo. The school aims to work with families to match support to each child’s needs. Additional needs. In November 2024, school-wide identification of special educational needs lacked precision and timeliness, and staff needed clearer guidance on meeting some pupils’ needs. Families considering nursery should weigh that wider concern alongside the positive early years findings.
All school staff receive child protection training when joining, with external training annually. Through Operation Encompass, police alert a key school adult when they are called to a domestic abuse incident that children in the household have experienced, allowing staff to respond with that context.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Gates open at 8.30am and classroom doors at 8.40am. The school day ends at 3.30pm, with nursery doors opening earlier to help parents collecting siblings. This is a practical consideration for families coordinating more than one collection.
