At a Glance

Stories, active play and children's own interests shape nursery life at Woodfield Primary School. For children aged two to four, this is the school's own nursery in Whitleigh, Plymouth, with a play-led approach that gives language, relationships and physical development a central role. The emphasis is on learning through experiences children can take part in, rather than simply listening to adults.

In March 2025, nursery children enjoyed their play and were learning routines that helped prepare them for school. That combination gives the provision its character: room to explore, alongside familiar expectations.

The Nursery Day

Children's interests help shape the curriculum, with a natural environment forming part of the nursery's approach. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) work emphasises communication, emotional and social development, and physical activity as foundations for further learning. In parent terms, talking, forming relationships and becoming more confident in movement are part of the learning itself.

Super Six is the named book collection used to introduce children to different texts and encourage curiosity about the world. Stories also support planned vocabulary development, giving children words to use as they explore and talk. In March 2025, early-years reading included poems and traditional tales.

Outdoor learning has concrete substance. In March 2025, nursery children had opportunities to plant and grow, explore water and sand, and use scooters. Adults supported play while encouraging children to do more for themselves. The practical implication is a day in which movement and exploration sit alongside language learning, with independence developed through things children actually do.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first nursery session. Families are contacted in the preceding term to confirm the place and receive a start date, paperwork and information about settling sessions. This gives the start a planned sequence, rather than leaving everything to the first day.

Class Dojo shares nursery experiences with families, while staff also seek informal conversations each day. Parents therefore have both a way to see children's activities and opportunities to discuss them directly. The early-years team works with families and other agencies to identify needs and support early intervention.

Speech and language support has inspection evidence specific to nursery children: in March 2025, delays were recognised promptly and children received help to catch up. For a child who needs support with communication, early identification matters alongside the nursery's everyday emphasis on stories and vocabulary.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the local authority's common application form.

There is a conditional admissions priority for Woodfield nursery children: to qualify for this oversubscription category, they must receive service premium, pupil premium or early years pupil premium when applying. It comes after the sibling category and requires a supplementary information form. This is priority for a defined group, not a promise of a place for nursery families generally.

Practical Information

The usual pattern for a 15-hour funded place is five mornings or five afternoons. Eligible two-year-olds can use ME2 funding from the term after their second birthday; the 15-hour entitlement for three- and four-year-olds begins in the term after their third birthday. Children using 30-hour funding receive priority for full-day spaces and lunch sessions. Paid places are also offered, with funded places prioritised; contact the school for current charges.

Nursery enquiries go to nursery@woodfieldpri.co.uk or 01752 706 384. Visits can be arranged through the office. Before starting, families need to supply a birth certificate and their ME2 or 30-hour code where applicable.
