Nursery at Polruan Primary Academy

A nursery inside Canute’s mixed age classroom gives Polruan’s provision its defining character. The pre-school children share the school’s early years and infant setting, rather than occupying a separate nursery room. The classroom has access to outdoor space, and the school stands above the village overlooking the Fowey Estuary. This is a nursery experience closely connected to school life.
Child-chosen play and adult-guided learning both have a place here. The balance changes with children’s needs across the year, with nursery key worker groups, small group activities and time for play to continue uninterrupted. Children choose from planned indoor and outdoor activities, giving them opportunities to repeat an idea, test it and practise independently.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings care, development and learning together. In parent terms, this means helping children communicate, move and build relationships alongside discovering stories, quantities and the world around them. Development Matters supports the approach, with Birth to 5 Matters also used in Little Nursery. Staff combine children’s interests with the knowledge and skills they need to develop, so their choices help shape the learning.
Inside, the emphasis is on experiences with a practical purpose. Outdoors, children are encouraged to try challenges and explore nature with adult support. Adults help children think ahead, discuss ideas and work out what they need before starting an activity. The intention is to give enough help for a child to take the next step while retaining opportunities to explore for themselves.
Each child has a key worker. For the September nursery intake, home visits help establish contact before children start, while summer stay and play sessions let parents explore the setting alongside their child and meet the team. These offer a gradual introduction to the people and surroundings that will become familiar.
Daily conversations and handovers sit alongside parent consultations and workshops. Seesaw allows families to share observations from home as well as respond to classroom learning. That gives staff another way to understand a child’s interests beyond nursery.
Early years behaviour expectations focus on kindness in actions and speech. For additional learning needs, the school’s SENDCo works with teachers and teaching assistants; support can involve smaller groups, classroom help and specialist resources. Speech and Language Therapy and Educational Psychology are among the outside services involved. Parents begin a learning-support conversation with their child’s teacher.
Reception applications are separate. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through Cornwall Council School Admissions; the application window runs from September to January. Keep that application distinct from nursery arrangements.
Transition sessions include children moving into Nursery or Reception. Familiarity with the shared classroom is a practical connection to school life, rather than an admissions entitlement.
