Runner bean seeds, homemade instruments and daily outdoor play give Saplings its character. This is the Lower Foundation nursery at Featherstone North Featherstone Junior and Infant School, for children aged three and four. It has 26 places, accommodating up to 52 children across its part-time patterns. The distinction matters: that is capacity across sessions, rather than a single group of 52.
A morning or afternoon provides three hours together; the longer pattern provides six. Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with understanding the world expressed through observing plants, asking questions and exploring familiar surroundings. In Saplings, children have spotted spring buds and daffodils, planted runner beans and learnt that growing plants need light and water. There is something tangible to take home and watch develop.
Indoor reading has a physical base: the early years area has its own library, alongside reading spaces in classrooms. Music brings a different kind of exploration. Lower Foundation children learn songs and rhymes, respond through movement and can build instruments at the creation station. These activities give children ways to listen, communicate and make something of their own.
The outdoor EYFS space supports imaginative play and physical activity, and children use it daily. Beyond that area, the school grounds include woodland, an allotment and two playgrounds. Outdoor learning takes place weekly across the school, making time outside part of learning rather than simply a break.
Ofsted's inspection on 22 and 23 November 2023 found that the early years curriculum was well planned, with activities shaped around children's interests and needs. Adults consistently demonstrated language effectively, helping children develop their communication skills. Talk is a clear educational priority here.
Foundation teaching staff and nursery nurses form part of the staffing structure. For additional learning needs, the school's SEND provision distinguishes classroom adaptations, targeted interventions and specialist support. An inclusion leader provides a contact route for families, so concerns can be directed to the team responsible for this work.
Jigsaw is used from nursery onwards for personal, social and health education. Its themes include Healthy Me and Relationships, bringing health, safety and getting along with others into planned learning.
For school lunches, ISS supplies the menu in partnership with Wakefield Council. Families changing between packed lunches and school dinners must give a week's notice, which makes meal planning a practical consideration.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route. The school directs applications for full-time school places to Wakefield Council's admissions website; the nursery application goes through the school office. Treat these as two distinct applications when planning your child's next step.
Saplings mornings run from 08:30 to 11:30, while afternoons run from 12:15 to 15:15. Children usually attend five mornings or five afternoons, giving 15 hours each week. The 30-hour pattern runs from 08:45 to 14:45; those places depend on numbers. These are fixed attendance patterns to weigh against family routines.

School uniform guidance recommends burgundy tops, white shirts or polo shirts and black trousers, skirts or pinafores, with clothing labelled. Contact the school for current charges.
