An outdoor space of its own and two session choices give St Joseph's Preschool its practical shape. The preschool and its outside space opened in September 2021, within St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Portishead. Children can join from their third birthday.
The preschool describes itself as small, warm and friendly, with an aim of helping children feel ready and excited about school. Its identity is that of a school's early years provision, with a preschool teacher and supporting practitioners.
A morning session, an afternoon session and an optional supervised lunch divide the day into clear parts. Families can use government funding for either teaching session; lunch is a separately charged option. That distinction matters when planning how much of the day a child will spend here.
Tuff tray activities give a concrete glimpse of the children's play, alongside the preschool's own outdoor space. The preschool also shares a Nativity video, adding a named example of children taking part in a performance.
The practical kit includes spare clothing, a coat, sun protection and a water bottle. Wellies are useful for outdoor time, while slippers are an option children may enjoy during cooler months. These are useful details for preparing a child for the session, rather than simply packing a school bag.
Lunch is supervised, and children staying for it bring a packed lunch from home. This gives families responsibility for what goes into the lunchbox. Pack the lunch alongside the child's water bottle when booking that part of the day.
Alongside the preschool teacher, the team includes a teaching assistant, SEN support staff and a Level 3 practitioner. Those roles distinguish teaching, practical assistance and additional-needs support. Families can also contact the school's SENDCo through the school office to discuss support needs.
Nappies and wipes belong in the child's kit if needed. The preschool has spare wellies, although there are not enough for every child, so bringing a pair avoids depending on a spare. Changes to a child's medical needs can be communicated to the school office.
Attending St Joseph's Preschool does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal school admissions process. The school uses North Somerset Council's coordinated application system, so preschool enrolment should not be treated as the Reception application.
Keep the two decisions separate: choosing the preschool concerns your child's nursery day; applying for Reception concerns allocation of a school place.
Session 1 runs from 8:20am to 11:20am; Session 2 runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Between them, the optional lunch session runs from 11:20am to 12:15pm. Government funding can cover the morning and afternoon sessions, but cannot be used for lunch. An annual registration charge also applies. Contact the preschool for current charges.
For enquiries, email PreSchool@St-Josephs.Org.Uk. The preschool team can advise on available places, arrange a viewing and help families complete the funding form. This provides a direct route to discuss attendance and see the preschool before joining.
For the journey, the school encourages walking, scooting or cycling. Its car park can become busy, and the gate closes when it is full. Families driving should allow for that restriction when planning the trip.
