Nursery at Meoncross School

Seahorses, Starfish and Beach School give Meoncross nursery its own identity within the school. Children start from two years and six months, with Seahorses for those aged two and a half to three and Starfish for three to four-year-olds. These are two distinct nursery rooms, allowing provision to be organised around age and stage.
The nursery occupies a purpose-built department on the ground floor of the Infant building. Each classroom opens to the outdoors, making outside learning part of the classroom arrangement rather than a separate destination. Qualified teachers and practitioners work with the children, under a Head of Early Years.
Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), alongside Development Matters. Here, that means a mixture of activities children choose and learning adults lead, with specialist sessions adding other experiences. The balance gives children room to pursue an interest while also taking part in planned teaching.
Music, French and ballet sit alongside drama, PE and Beach School in the core nursery provision. Happy Diggers and Mini Masterchefs add further named activities. This is a nursery day with several different ways to participate, from movement and performance to experiences beyond the classroom.
Indoor and outdoor learning connect through the classroom doors. In September 2024, ISI found that early-years teaching developed important skills through carefully planned lessons, with classrooms and outdoor activities supporting further practice. That gives substance to the nursery's emphasis on learning in both spaces.
Social learning matters too. In September 2024, early-years activities helped children practise working together, sharing and understanding others' feelings. Making friends is part of the learning, with adults encouraging positive interaction between children.
Regular attendance is part of the nursery's approach to settling. The school links its minimum of three core sessions in Seahorses to helping children settle and participate in the curriculum; Starfish requires at least six. Families therefore need to plan for a recurring weekly commitment.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the SENDCo works with parents, the child's key person and relevant professionals to plan support. Support plans are reviewed termly, with more frequent reviews possible in exceptional circumstances. In September 2024, early-years staff understood children's additional needs, adjusted teaching and discussed individual progress. All EYFS staff had paediatric first-aid training.
The Kitchen @ Meoncross prepares meals on site. Nursery menu examples include macaroni cheese and turkey, while fruit, vegetable crudités and yoghurt accompany the food provision. Morning and afternoon snacks include fruit with rice cakes or toast fingers. Dairy-free and gluten-free alternatives can be requested daily. Products may carry manufacturing warnings about possible nut traces, so families managing allergies should keep that qualification in mind.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Progression is a separate admissions decision, and the school may decline a place if it cannot meet a child's needs. Families should discuss progression with the Admissions Manager through the school's admissions process before making plans for Reception.
Preparation and admission are different questions. Starfish's minimum attendance is intended to prepare children for full-time school, while the early-years work on friendship, cooperation and sharing supports readiness for the next stage. Those experiences do not make progression automatic.
Core nursery hours are 8:45am to 3:45pm across 38 weeks: the usual 36 term-time weeks plus the first week of the summer and Christmas holidays. Little Lagooners supplies holiday provision outside the nursery's own calendar and before-school and after-school care during term time. Morning care starts at 7:30am; afternoon care finishes at 6pm. Holiday club has a Christmas closure and excludes inset days and bank holidays.
Eligible three and four-year-olds can use 15 funded hours from the term following their third birthday, across the nursery's opening hours. Meoncross does not offer 30 funded hours. Additional hours are charged, and an enhanced provision charge applies to funded core hours for children eligible for the EYE Grant. Ask the admissions team for current charges.
Enquiries go to the Admissions Manager, and private tours can be arranged during term time. This gives families an opportunity to discuss their child's needs and the attendance pattern before applying.
