Kind play, growing independence and close relationships with families give Flying Bull's nursery its character. Teaching needs attention, though. The provision welcomes children aged two, three and four within The Flying Bull Academy on Flying Bull Lane in Buckland, Portsmouth. It is an early start within a primary school, with care and learning considered together.
Ofsted's report dated 9 June 2026 judged early years as Needs attention. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the important distinction is between the positive care children receive and the weaknesses in how adults extend their learning.
The early years curriculum has been newly developed, with learning organised into milestones so children can build skills and knowledge in steps. In everyday terms, the intention is that learning connects over time rather than becoming a collection of unrelated activities. Children enjoy taking part. The curriculum's structure gives adults a basis for deciding what children should learn next.
Play also involves learning how to get along. Nursery children generally concentrate on activities and remain calm with other children. Adults guide them towards friendly communication and considerate play, while children develop more independence in looking after themselves and handling emotions. These are practical foundations for taking part in a group and managing everyday nursery routines.
Language development. In June 2026, adult teaching and interaction needed further work. Opportunities to introduce vocabulary and help children understand and use it during play were too limited. This matters because an enjoyable activity should also give a child something new to think about or say. The quality of those conversations is an important consideration when choosing this nursery.
Staff showed care for children in June 2026, and children's everyday needs were met well. Starting early years was handled with warmth and a clear purpose, helping children begin to settle into learning. The welcome matters, especially for a young child making the first move into a group setting.
Relationships with parents are a strength of the nursery's care. Staff build effective connections with families as children join, allowing them to understand the children they look after. That knowledge supports attention to individual needs rather than treating settling as simply getting used to a timetable. A school SENDCo remit includes the mainstream nursery, providing a point of contact for families discussing special educational needs or disabilities.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. The University of Chichester Academy Trust is the admissions authority, and its academies take part in admission coordination through their local authority. Treat the nursery decision and the later school application as two separate decisions.
