Nursery at The Wroxham School

Language and growing independence give Wroxham’s nursery its clearest character. This school nursery in Potters Bar welcomes children aged three and four, with a choice of morning, afternoon or whole-day attendance during term time. That gives families different ways to fit nursery into their week, rather than a single session pattern.
At the Ofsted inspection on 4 and 5 June 2024, the school’s early years provision was graded Outstanding. That judgement covers the early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The strongest nursery-relevant findings concern communication, confidence and readiness for the next educational stage.
Communication is a substantial strength. In June 2024, children in the early years received exceptional support to develop language and communication, creating a strong base for later learning. For parents, this matters beyond learning new words: being able to express ideas and understand others is part of becoming ready to learn.
Independence also has a clear place in the experience. Children showed confidence and worked independently on tasks in June 2024. The emphasis is therefore on what children can increasingly do for themselves, alongside their developing communication. These are useful foundations for the move beyond nursery, rather than a reason to judge the provision through the older pupils’ results.
The early years team includes an EYFS phase leader, a deputy early years leader and teaching assistants working in EYFS. There is also an early years lunchtime playleader. Teaching and lunchtime support therefore have distinct roles within the wider team, a useful practical detail for families considering a whole-day session.
The school describes its approach as inclusive, with children’s enjoyment of learning, friendships and feeling safe among its aims. It also describes listening to children and treating them with respect as part of school life.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Hertfordshire County Council, rather than treating their nursery place as an automatic continuation. Keep the two applications separate in your planning.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026, with applications made online through Hertfordshire’s admissions service. That deadline is now past and belongs to that intake only.
Educational preparation is a separate question from admission. In June 2024, early years children were ready for their next stage of education. Confidence, independence and communication are meaningful preparation, but they do not settle where a child will receive a Reception place.
Attendance is during term time, with up to 30 hours offered and morning, afternoon and all-day sessions available. Families can apply directly to the school for nursery, while Reception applications follow the council route.
