Short sessions with a familiar adult give Halsnead’s nursery day its distinctive rhythm. Children meet in key worker groups at the beginning and close of each session, with movement, hand skills and conversation as the focus. This is the school’s own nursery in Whiston, within its early years provision.
At the Ofsted inspection on 3 and 4 July 2023, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Adult-led activities sit alongside stretches of play chosen by children. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning about language, relationships and physical skills with early reading, writing, maths, creativity and discovering the world. Here, planning follows Development Matters and responds to children’s interests. Staff prepare indoor and outdoor activities with vocabulary in mind, giving conversation a place across the learning environment.
Key worker time includes a ten-minute activity twice daily. For focused learning, children join colour groups organised around their abilities; membership changes with individual needs. This makes the grouping responsive rather than a fixed label. The timetable is adapted so children attending for 15 hours or 30 hours a week have the same session opportunities.
Books have their own spaces indoors and outside. Children hear a story at least once daily, and books also accompany other learning areas, so reading is not confined to story time. A book bag and story book go home from nursery age, extending that routine into family life.
Phase One phonics concentrates on listening and speaking, including hearing sounds and preparing to blend them orally. Fred Talk and Fred games are used daily in early years. During the summer term, nursery children who are ready begin letter sounds through Read, Write, Inc. The readiness condition matters: this is a next step for those prepared for it.
An outdoor learning area supports play in different weather. Past nursery activities have included an autumn walk linked to The Gruffalo and a police visit while learning about people who help us. These give stories and topics a practical connection beyond group teaching.
Before starting, new nursery children receive a home visit from nursery staff. Parents also attend an induction meeting to meet teachers and see classrooms. Those contacts begin the relationship before the first session.
In July 2023, early years children settled successfully with supportive staff, who helped them develop language and vocabulary through activities. Children also became familiar with routines, listened to adults and worked cooperatively with other children.
FAMLY carries each child’s individual Learning Journey and messages about events. Families can join a Come learn with us session each term, while weekly home activities begin with talking. This gives parents concrete ways to continue learning together. For additional needs, the school has a SENDCo and Learning Mentor; parents can contact the office to speak with the support team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Halsnead uses Knowsley School Admissions procedures and recommends applying online.
Preparation for that change is separate from allocation. Parent workshops include getting ready for Reception, and children allocated a Reception place attend an induction day, playing and working with their new teacher in small groups.
The nursery day runs from 8:30am to 3:00pm and contains two sessions of three hours. Children attend for either 15 or 30 hours a week. Childcare support eligibility can be checked through Childcare Choices.
To arrange a visit, telephone the school office on 0151 4593973. Visits for prospective families are by appointment.
