Nursery at Knowsley Village School

Independence starts early at Knowsley Village School’s nursery. In March 2025, children across the early years were learning through exploratory activities and building independence from their earliest days. This gives the provision a clear educational purpose: children develop the ability to do more for themselves alongside their learning.
The nursery belongs to the community primary school on Sugar Lane and takes children from the term after their third birthday. It serves children aged three and four. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 4 and 5 March 2025; that judgement covers early years within the school.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) frames nursery learning here: children learn through exploring activities and doing more for themselves. Planned activities extend what they learn. In March 2025, the early years curriculum was carefully planned, with activities that developed and extended children’s learning. Nursery children were prepared for their next stage of education.
For families, the clearest distinction in the day is between a three-hour session and the extended option. Morning children attend from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Eligible families can choose the extended session, spanning 8.30am to 3.30pm, with lunchtime care connecting the two sessions. That lunchtime arrangement matters when planning a continuous day.
Lunch can be a school dinner or a packed lunch brought from home. Nursery children taking a school dinner incur a separate charge. For eligible children using the extended session, care between 11.30am and 12.30pm also carries an additional charge beyond the funded sessions. Families therefore need to account for both lunchtime supervision and their chosen meal arrangement when considering the longer day.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to this school’s Reception, and nursery attendance gives no additional priority. The 2027/28 admission arrangements make that separation explicit. Choosing the nursery is a decision about early education; securing a Reception place requires another application.
For September 2027 entry, families must apply by 15 January 2027. Knowsley residents use the council’s Common Application Form through its online parent portal, with a paper form obtainable from the School Admissions Service. Families living outside Knowsley apply through their own local authority. The allocation outcome is due on 16 April 2027. Keep the Reception deadline separate from any nursery paperwork.
Both 15-hour and 30-hour provision are offered, with the extended option restricted to eligible families. Extended places. Capacity for the longer childcare offer is limited. Families relying on it should establish availability before organising their childcare around that pattern.
The school office handles enquiries on 0151 289 5349, and families can arrange a visit by telephone. Nursery applications use the council’s nursery form, obtainable through the school or Knowsley Council.
The school calendar includes a half-term break from 26 to 30 October 2026 and a Christmas break from 21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027. These dates help families plan care around school closures. Contact the school for current lunchtime care and dinner charges.
Children normally start in the term following their third birthday. The nursery caters for three- and four-year-olds.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am and afternoon sessions from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The extended session for eligible families runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm.
The school offers 15-hour and 30-hour provision. The extended offer requires eligibility, and places are limited. Lunchtime care is charged separately from the funded sessions.
Children staying for lunch can have a separately charged school dinner or bring a packed lunch. Lunchtime supervision for eligible children using the extended session has an additional charge.
