At a Glance

Language, outdoor play and space to pause give St Luke’s early years provision its character. The nursery belongs to the Catholic primary school on Shaw Lane in Prescot, with early years accommodation in a single-storey building. It gives the youngest children a distinct base within the school site.

In the Ofsted document published in May 2026, early years reached the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. Its strengths include thoughtfully ordered learning, responsive care and opportunities to learn together outdoors.

The Nursery Day

The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Here, learning includes developing communication, managing feelings and building physical skills, alongside early literacy and mathematics. Activities inside and outside contribute to that development, so learning extends beyond sitting with an adult.

Conversation has a clear purpose. Adults ask questions that encourage children to explain their ideas, helping them gain confidence in speaking and expand their vocabulary. Children cooperate in their play and show enthusiasm for outdoor learning. Across early years, reading receives sustained attention and phonics takes place daily, introducing the sounds children need for later reading.

There is an important teaching limitation. Adults sometimes miss chances to develop children’s answers further and deepen their understanding. Deepening those exchanges is an early years improvement priority in May 2026. For parents, the useful distinction is between giving children opportunities to talk and helping them develop an idea through a longer conversation.

Care and Support

Settling starts with contact at home: the nursery teacher and SEND coordinator make home visits to meet new parents and discuss concerns before children start. This gives families an opportunity to explain their child’s needs before the first session.

Within early years, adults respond promptly when children need help. Communication aids and quiet spaces for emotional regulation support children who need additional assistance, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The environment allows children with SEND to learn and play with their peers. Support is planned with families and relevant professionals, rather than relying on classroom observation alone.

Early years gained Communication Friendly Setting status during 2024/25, and staff received training in speech, language and communication. The school’s 2025/26 SEND information report also records paediatric first aid certification for all staff. These are concrete parts of the support structure around nursery children.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Under the 2026/27 admission arrangements, it is not an oversubscription priority either. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority using its Common Application Form, by the normal admissions deadline. A supplementary form is requested for applications under the specified faith criteria.

Classroom familiarity is a separate matter. The school’s transition arrangements include sessions in the next classroom and opportunities to meet new teachers. Children with autism or similar needs can also receive social stories at home, helping families prepare them for a change of room and adults.

Practical Information

Nursery applications go directly to the school. Contact the office on 0151 477 8580; visits can be arranged by contacting the administrator beforehand so that a member of staff can welcome the family.

Lunchtime parking. Nursery families dropping off or collecting children over lunch should use the church car park. The school asks them to avoid its own car park, making this a practical detail to build into the journey.

Topform supplies nursery uniform items throughout the year. Refer to the school for current charges.
